Universal Orlando Powers Down Opening Day Location After More Than 430 Months of Operation

After more than 30 years, Universal Studios Florida has closed an opening-day attraction, leaving ET: Adventure as the last remaining ride from 1990.

This location brought joy and wonder to millions around the world when it first debuted more than 30 years ago. Now, the location sits vacant, waiting for something new to take over.

Universal Closes Animal Actors for Good After 36 Years, Ending an Opening-Day Tradition

For 36 years, one of the stars at Universal Studios Florida could be a dog, a cat, or a bird. Now the stage they shared has gone dark. The Animal Actors closure took effect Tuesday, November 3, 2026, ending a live entertainment tradition that began the day Universal Studios Florida opened.

Monday, November 2, was the final performance date for Animal Actors on Location!, as Inside the Magic reported in its final-weekend coverage. Universal lists November 3 as the permanent closure date on its official park calendar. If Animal Actors was on your list for an upcoming Orlando trip, it’s time to take it off the itinerary.

The Animal Actors Closure Ends a Show That Started on Opening Day

As Inside the Magic reported when Universal announced the closure, the show debuted as Animal Actors Stage on June 7, 1990, the day Universal Studios Florida opened. It later became Animal Planet Live before taking on the Animal Actors on Location! name. The title changed, but the basic draw held up for more than three decades. Guests could watch trained animals perform and get a look at how those performances came together for movies and television.

The show’s official attraction page featured a bird landing on an audience member’s hand and a pug dressed as Frank from Men in Black. Those two images capture how much the format could do with a stage, a trainer, and a well-timed cue. A movie reference could get a laugh, and a live demonstration could show the audience a skill that would otherwise go by in seconds on screen.

That was part of the appeal of Universal’s original studio-park idea. You could spend part of the day inside a movie’s story and another part seeing how a performance was made. Animal Actors gave that second idea a stage of its own.

E.T. Adventure Remains on the Lineup as Another 1990 Show Gets a Refresh

Guests looking for a piece of opening-day Universal can still find E.T. Adventure in the Hollywood section of Universal Studios Florida. The ride sends guests aboard flying bicycles on a trip to E.T.’s home planet. It’s a surviving example of the other side of the park’s early appeal: the chance to step into a movie and take part in its story.

Universal Orlando’s Horror Make-Up Show also traces its roots to opening day. As of November 3, Universal lists it as temporarily closed for a project that began in May. Inside the Magic’s coverage of the Horror Make-Up Show reimagining explains how the production used comedy and practical effects to give audiences a look at the craft behind movie scares.

The two closures matter differently when you’re planning a visit. Animal Actors has finished its run, while the Horror Make-Up Show is slated to return in a reimagined form. E.T. Adventure remains listed, with a 34-inch minimum height and a supervising companion required for riders under 48 inches. Families who used Animal Actors as a show everyone could sit down for together will want to account for those ride requirements before counting on E.T. as a substitute.

Universal Has a New Experience Planned for the Animal Actors Site

Universal said the closure would make way for a new experience, as Inside the Magic noted in its October update on the closure dates. As of November 3, Universal hasn’t identified the replacement or given guests an opening date.

The area around the amphitheater has already changed considerably. Universal’s 2023 DreamWorks Land announcement laid out plans to bring characters from Shrek, Trolls, and Kung Fu Panda to the former KidZone area. Animal Actors carried on through that transition, keeping a live filmmaking demonstration in the lineup even as the surrounding attractions took on new identities.

For now, the biggest change is the one guests will feel on their next visit. There’s one fewer place to sit down and see how a little bit of movie magic comes together in real time. The detail to watch when Universal reveals its plans is what kind of experience will fill that spot, and whether live performance will still have a home there.

Since first stepping inside the Magic Kingdom at nine years old, I knew I was destined to be a theme Park enthusiast. Although I consider myself a theme Park junkie, I still have much to learn and discover about Disney. Universal Orlando Resort has my heart; being an Annual Passholder means visiting my favorite places on Earth when possible! When I’m not writing about Disney, Universal, or entertainment news, you’ll find me cruising on my motorcycle, hiking throughout my local metro parks, or spending quality time with my girlfriend, family, or friends.
