The physical landscape of Walt Disney World is changing at a breakneck pace. If you have visited Magic Kingdom’s Frontierland recently, you have likely noticed the sprawling construction walls taking over the pathway. Today, that active work zone claimed another piece of theme park history as Disney officially leveled a fan-favorite quick-service kiosk.
As of this morning, August 9, 2026, Westward Ho Refreshments has been completely demolished. The rustic wooden stand has been wiped off the map to clear space for the park’s massive Cars-inspired expansion, Piston Peak National Park.
Here is what guests need to know about the cleared site and where to find their favorite relocated snacks.
A Rapid Teardown in Frontierland
Disney has wasted absolutely no time clearing the path for Piston Peak. Westward Ho permanently closed its serving windows on June 21, 2026. Almost immediately, it was scrubbed from the My Disney Experience app, and tall construction walls were erected around its perimeter.
By late July, workers from Buena Vista Construction Company were seen dismantling the roof, removing the signage, and gutting the interior framework. Today, the building is entirely gone.
If you look across the Frontierland promenade now, you will see a bustling staging ground filled with heavy machinery and raw materials. With the kiosk completely eradicated, guests actually have an unprecedented, unobstructed view straight over the construction walls toward the peaks of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. This swift demolition closely mirrors the fate of Big Al’s, a nearby merchandise stand that was permanently closed in May 2026 and quickly leveled.
Where Did the Snacks Go?
Before its closure, Westward Ho was heavily relied upon for midday fuel and was famous for serving frozen lemonade, cold-brew coffee, candied bacon, and savory corn dog nuggets. With the stand demolished and construction barriers expanding, Disney has relocated the neighboring snack carts to keep parkgoers fed:
- Churros: The churro cart previously located next to Westward Ho has been relocated down the path near the Frontier Trading Post.
- Popcorn: Popcorn operations have been split into two spots to handle the heavy foot traffic. You can now find one cart near the Disney Vacation Club kiosk and another by Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn and Café.
Making Way for Piston Peak
The leveling of Westward Ho is just a small piece of a much larger, historic overhaul. Imagineers are actively transforming the western edge of Magic Kingdom into Piston Peak National Park.
To create this massive Cars-themed area, Disney made the controversial decision to permanently close Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America in 2025. The former waterway has already been drained and graded into a massive dirt foundational site. By demolishing pathway structures, such as Westward Ho and Big Al’s, construction crews can push their active work zones farther out toward the former riverwalk.
While Frontierland currently feels more like an industrial construction zone than the American frontier, these short-term growing pains are paving the way for the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom’s history.
