What Is Actually Replacing DinoLand: Disney Confirms New Tropical Americas Lineup

For years, DinoLand U.S.A. has been one of the most divisive areas in Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

Some guests loved the quirky roadside carnival atmosphere. Others viewed it as the one section of the park that never quite fit with the rest of Animal Kingdom’s immersive environments. Regardless of where fans stood on the debate, one thing became increasingly clear: Disney was preparing for a major change.

Now, that change is happening.

As construction continues across the former DinoLand footprint, Disney is steadily revealing what guests can expect when Tropical Americas arrives. While much of the conversation has focused on Encanto and Indiana Jones, Disney has now confirmed another piece of the lineup that could end up being one of the most important additions for families visiting Animal Kingdom.

And surprisingly, it isn’t a ride.

Tropical Americas Continues to Take Shape

Disney first announced Tropical Americas as the replacement for DinoLand U.S.A., bringing an entirely new identity to this corner of Animal Kingdom.

The land is inspired by the cultures, landscapes, and wildlife of Central and South America and will feature multiple attractions, new experiences, dining locations, and themed environments.

The biggest headliner will be a new Encanto attraction. While Disney has not revealed every detail about the ride, fans know it will bring guests into the world of the Madrigal family and serve as one of the centerpiece experiences inside the land.

At the same time, Disney is transforming DINOSAUR into a new Indiana Jones adventure. Rather than building an entirely new attraction from the ground up, Imagineers are using the existing ride system while creating a brand-new story inspired by the famous adventurer.

Those two attractions alone represent a massive shift for Animal Kingdom.

But they are not the only things coming.

Disney Confirms New Playground

A newly filed permit has revealed additional details about another confirmed Tropical Americas addition: a playground designed for younger guests. The permit lists Landscape Structures, Inc., a company that specializes in playground construction, as the contractor for the project.

Disney had previously mentioned a playground would be part of Tropical Americas, but this latest permit shows the project is continuing to move forward.

Earlier planning documents indicated the playground will be built near the current Cretaceous Trail area, close to DINOSAUR and Restaurantosaurus. The plans reportedly showed slides and climbing elements as part of the experience.

At first glance, a playground may seem like a small addition compared to Encanto or Indiana Jones.

But for Animal Kingdom, it could address one of the park’s biggest shortcomings.

Animal Kingdom Needs More Family Play Spaces

Animal Kingdom offers incredible attractions, beautiful scenery, and some of the best themed environments Disney has ever created.

What it doesn’t have is an abundance of places where younger children can simply run around, unless you count the trails as that.

Magic Kingdom has multiple interactive areas and experiences designed specifically for little ones. EPCOT offers open spaces throughout World Celebration and World Discovery. Even Disney’s Hollywood Studios has added more family-focused entertainment options in recent years, with a new Alice in Wonderland playground on the way.

Animal Kingdom has traditionally relied more heavily on trails, exhibits, and attractions.

That works well for older guests, but parents visiting with toddlers often find themselves looking for a place where children can safely burn off energy without waiting in another line.

The new playground could become exactly that.

The Water Feature Question

One of the biggest unanswered questions is whether Disney will include some type of water-play component.

At this point, Disney has not confirmed any splash area, fountains, misting zones, or interactive water features.

But if Tropical Americas includes even a modest water-play area, it could become one of the most popular spots in the entire park.

Anyone who has spent a summer afternoon at Animal Kingdom understands why.

The park can feel significantly warmer than other Disney parks due to its dense landscaping and winding pathways. While there are certainly indoor attractions and air-conditioned spaces available, there are very few opportunities for children to cool off while actively playing.

A playground with water elements would solve two problems at once.

Kids could climb, explore, and stay entertained while also escaping some of Florida’s intense heat.

For many families, that would be just as valuable as another attraction.

More Than Just Rides

One thing Disney has learned over the years is that successful lands need more than major rides.

Guests need places to relax. They need areas to explore. They need experiences that appeal to different age groups.

Not every visitor is tall enough for every attraction.

Not every family wants to spend the entire day moving from queue to queue.

That’s where additions like this playground become surprisingly important.

A well-designed play area gives families a reason to linger. It creates a place for children to engage with the environment instead of simply walking through it. It also helps balance out a land that will already feature major attractions drawing large crowds.

In many ways, these types of additions often have a bigger impact on day-to-day guest satisfaction than fans initially realize.

The Future of DinoLand

When Tropical Americas opens, DinoLand U.S.A. will largely be a memory.

The carnival games, roadside theming, and dinosaur-focused attractions that defined the land for decades are being replaced by something entirely new.

In their place, guests will find an Encanto attraction, an Indiana Jones adventure, new themed environments, dining experiences, and now a family playground designed specifically for younger visitors.

The transformation represents one of the largest changes Animal Kingdom has seen since the park first opened.

And while Encanto and Indiana Jones will undoubtedly receive most of the attention, families may eventually discover that one of the most useful additions is also one of the simplest.

Because sometimes what Animal Kingdom needs most isn’t another ride.

It’s a place where kids can run, climb, play, and maybe even cool off after spending a day exploring one of Disney World’s most beautiful parks.
