‘Zootopia’ Arrives in Its First Attraction at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park exemplifies Walt Disney’s dream of having animals in a Disney Park while also serving conservation-based education and support per the Park’s work with the AZA (Association of Zoos & Aquariums.)

It is still a Disney Park, after all, so Animal Kingdom succeeds in captivating Guests with both real-world conservation initiatives alongside iconic Disney stories and characters they know and love. And whether or not you love it, one Disney animal story was recently brought up by Disney executives as a possible replacement to DinoLand U.S.A.: Zootopia (2016).

Zootopia has been considered by fans for a presence in Animal Kingdom since the film was released, and while some Guests would be stoked to see characters from the film have their own attraction in the Park, others, including former Disney Imagineer Joe Rohde who led the development of Animal Kingdom, disagree.

Regardless of which Park we would prefer to see Zootopia in, Disney has just announced that it’s already begun to arrive in Animal Kingdom to coincide with the promotion of the Zootopia+ series on Disney+. The film has not made its way to DinoLand (yet?) but it is now part of an overlay of an Animal Kingdom attraction, and we’ve got all of the details.

The Disney Parks Blog just announced that Guests at Disney’s Animal Kingdom can now learn to draw their favorite characters from Zootopia at The Animation Experience at Conservation Station! The drawing class can be found within Rafiki’s Planet Watch (you’ll need to take the Wildlife Express train up from Africa, near the exit of Kilimanjaro Safaris, but it’s well worth the visit.)

Drawing classes at The Animation Experience feature 25-minute sessions with Disney animators, and the new characters from Zootopia that Guests can now learn to draw include Judy Hopps, Nick Wild, and Flash. Like the rest of Animal Kingdom, this attraction needs to keep a tie-in to the Park’s conservation efforts, so while Guests draw they can learn facts about the real-world animals that inspired the film.

Guests will also see behind-the-scenes footage from research trips that took place during the creation of Zootopia+, and they will leave with a greater understanding of how they can help conservation efforts for animals in the wild. Six new episodes of Zootopia+ from Walt Disney Animation Studios are streaming now on Disney+. Watch them from the comfort of home then head to Animal Kingdom to learn how to draw your favorite characters.

As for more Zootopia in Animal Kingdom, Disney has not commented on the Blue Sky ideas including Zootopia as a potential replacement for DinoLand U.S.A. since the D23 Expo in September, but we will report back here on Disney Tips with any updates as they are available.
