10 “Outside the Box” Things To Do at Walt Disney World

There are so many amazing things to do and experience at Walt Disney World and some of them are actually quite unique.  Take a look at these 10 “outside the box” things to do while at Walt Disney World:

10. Take surfing lessons

Yes, you read that right!  You can actually take surfing lessons while at Walt Disney World.  Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon wave pool produces the perfect wave over and over again, which makes a great location for guests to learn how to surf.  The class is offered outside of normal operating hours on select days, and has an additional cost associated with it.

9. Ride in a helium balloon over Disney Springs

If you visit the Disney Springs area, you will probably notice the large balloon in the skies.  For an additional cost per person, you can ride up a couple hundred feet in the air for some of the most amazing views of all of Walt Disney World.  The experience is different in the day versus at night, so you might as well try both!  The balloon isn’t a hot air balloon like many think, it is actually a helium filled balloon that is tethered to the station below.

8. Go on an African savanna tour

While at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, guests are able to ride Kilimanjaro Safaris for an amazing safari experience.  They can also take that to the next level by booking a special behind the scenes tour for an additional cost.  The tour takes the guests deeper into the savanna for looks and interactions unlike what they can have on the attraction.  It is definitely a unique, amazing experience for guests who love learning more about African animals and their habitats.

7. Go on a horse trail ride

If you love horses, then you are in luck.  Head over to Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground for a few different experiences.  Guests can go on horseback trail rides.  There are also carriage rides for guests who prefer to ride from the comfort of a carriage.  It is definitely crazy to think of going horseback riding while visiting a major theme park!

6. Rent a boat to explore the lagoon

If you enjoy being out on the water, there are multiple boating rental options that guests can look into.  There are also fishing excursions for the fisherman in your group. It is a unique way to explore the Walt Disney World Resort waterways and take a break from the hustle and bustle of the theme parks for the peace and serenity of the water.

5. Go scuba diving at The Seas pavilion

For guests who love to get more up close and personal with marine life, they will definitely want to check out the scuba options at The Seas pavilion at Epcot.  The backstage tours allow guests to scuba in the large tank with the water residents.  It is an amazing experience and unlike what you might expect when visiting Walt Disney World.

4. Mail a coconut back home

If you want to send something fun back home or to your loved ones, you can actually mail a coconut back home.  In select gift shops, you can actually purchase a postage paid coconut with “Greetings from Walt Disney World” on it and mail it to anywhere in the United States.  The cost is around $20, which does include the postage.  The typical locations where it can be found is the Pirates of the Caribbean gift shop and gift shops at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort and Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort.

3. Go parasailing over Bay Lake

This is definitely an amazing way to get some of the best views of the Magic Kingdom area of Walt Disney World.  Guests get to ride in the air from around 8 to 10 minutes for regular flights for around 450 feet off the boat.  There are solo and tandem flights available so that you can enjoy it with one of your loved ones.  Guests don’t even need a swimsuit, since they launch and land right from the boat!

2. Get a haircut at the Harmony Barber Shop

There is something extra special about visiting Harmony Barber Shop!  The location is set up like an old school barber shop and the cast members are delightful.  Guests can get a little trim with extra magic!  We have been lucky enough to be in there when Mary Poppins has dropped by, too, so you never know who you might see in there.

1. Rent a surrey bike to ride along Disney’s BoardWalk

If you want a unique way to explore Walt Disney World, then consider renting a surrey bike where offered.  My favorite place to ride them is over at Disney’s BoardWalk to check out the BoardWalk area.  They are also available at other resorts, too.  It is a unique experience and something that the entire family can enjoy.

About Christy Caby

I am a diehard Disney fanatic! I fell in love with all things Disney from an early age and that only increased once I first visited Walt Disney World! It led me to complete a yearlong Disney College Program working at merchandise locations within Disney’s Hollywood Studios (Disney-MGM Studios at that time) and I worked for Disney Parks & Resorts Technology in Project/Program Management. Now I get to write about Disney and help others plan their magical vacations! Disney holds a special place in the hearts of my entire family as my husband proposed there, we honeymooned there, took trips while pregnant with each of my boys and have visited with them many, many times from 8 weeks old through now. One of my favorite memories from each trip is always the look on my kids’ faces the first time they see the castle. I’d love to help you plan your magical vacation!
