6 Things You Will Love About Hollywood Brown Derby

Christy Caby
If you are looking for a nostalgic restaurant that pulls you into everything that you would expect Hollywood to have been, then the Hollywood Brown Derby is the place for you. This restaurant is definitely acceptable for kids, but is also one of our favorite date night locations. It is actually where we dined right after my husband proposed, so it holds a bit of a special place in our hearts. Here are 6 things that you will love about Hollywood Brown Derby:

6. The Hollywood glitz and glamour.

The Brown Derby takes you back to the Golden Age of Hollywood where you feel like a celebrity from the moment that you walk under the large covered walkway and walk through the entry to the restaurant. The restaurant is a replica of the Brown Derby restaurant in the real Hollywood where celebrities regularly frequented. It was a part of old Hollywood culture and we get to see that come to life at Disney.

5. Birthday phone call.

Back in the day before cell phones (yes kids, there was such a day) people had to be tracked down wherever they were. You were considered especially important if you received a call out and about at restaurants, such as the Brown Derby. You would be asked to take your call and everyone would know that you were there. On your birthday, you may just receive a special call from a certain “goofy” character that we know and love while at dining at the Derby. It’s an extra special touch and a lot of fun!

4. Recipe cards.

Love some of the classic items on the menu? Well, you can actually pick up a recipe card for some of the menu items that have been on the menu forever. You can collect the recipe cards as a souvenir and/or use them to try to recreate the fabulous meals at home for your family. This is great scrapbook material for the scrappers out there!

3. Dining with an Imagineer.

This restaurant is the only one to offer this amazing experience. You can pay a set price to have a 4 hour lunch with a real Disney Imagineer. You get to dine on a delicious meal unique to the Derby and get to ask a real Imagineer all the questions you have ever wanted to know about what it means to be an Imagineer for Disney. This is a very popular and interesting opportunity that I recommend that all Disney fans experience at least once.

2. The outdoor lounge.

The restaurant added The Brown Derby Lounge as an outdoor seating option for the restaurant. This add-on location offers a variety of special beverages and appetizer/small plate options if you aren’t necessarily looking for a full formal meal, but want theme-inspired food options exclusive to the restaurant. The location is beautiful at night amongst the twinkling lights in the trees and the view of Sunset and Hollywood Boulevard.

1. The menu.

The food at this restaurant is amazing. This dining location is a Signature dining experience. This means that it requires 2 dining entitlements if you are on the dining plan, and almost means that the prices are higher than most Disney table service restaurants. The price is definitely worth it to us. The steak is one of my husband’s favorites to enjoy on the menu. I am a fan of one of the classic dishes they are known for, the Cobb salad. This salad and the Grapefruit Cake are iconic dishes that were menu items at the original restaurant. They are both worthy of remaining on the menu, for sure.

About Christy Caby

I am a diehard Disney fanatic! I fell in love with all things Disney from an early age and that only increased once I first visited Walt Disney World! It led me to complete a yearlong Disney College Program working at merchandise locations within Disney’s Hollywood Studios (Disney-MGM Studios at that time) and I worked for Disney Parks & Resorts Technology in Project/Program Management. Now I get to write about Disney and help others plan their magical vacations! Disney holds a special place in the hearts of my entire family as my husband proposed there, we honeymooned there, took trips while pregnant with each of my boys and have visited with them many, many times from 8 weeks old through now. One of my favorite memories from each trip is always the look on my kids’ faces the first time they see the castle. I’d love to help you plan your magical vacation!
