With IO Interactive’s “007 First Light” on the horizon and Amazon MGM’s film reboot in development, it’s possible the next James Bond might come from the world of gaming.
“First Light”, an upcoming third-person action-adventure game, features a brand-new actor in the role of 007. While the studio hasn’t confirmed his identity, many believe it’s Patrick Gibson — best known for the hit TV series Dexter: Original Sin.
Gibson hasn’t responded to speculation, and IO’s franchise director Jonathan Lacaille declined to comment in a recent RadioTimes.com interview, saying only that the reveal will come later this summer.
The developers insist that “First Light” is separate from the upcoming film franchise, with Lacaille clarifying, “It’s been discussed, but it’s not the case.”
Still, given Amazon MGM’s control over both projects, that line could easily blur. After all, previous Bond actors like Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig have appeared in games after their movie debuts. Could “First Light” be set to reverse that trend?
The timing makes things interesting. Denis Villeneuve (Dune) is attached to direct the new Bond movie, with Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) writing. The producers — including Amy Pascal and David Heyman — are starting from scratch, with longtime EON stewards Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson stepping back.
Casting for Bond remains open, though names like Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Henry Golding, and Tom Holland have made headlines.

But if Gibson’s performance in “First Light” hits the mark (though he’s still only rumored), and audiences embrace him, there’s every reason for Amazon to consider bringing him over to the main franchise. A seamless transition from digital to cinematic Bond would be unprecedented — but not a mission impossible.
“First Light” explores Bond’s early years, beginning with the loss of his parents and leading up to his induction into MI6. Gameplay promises stealth, gunplay, gadgets, and high-speed action — with Bond characterized as “young, resourceful, and sometimes reckless.”
Whether or not the game’s actor trades pixelated martini glasses for ones on the big screen, “First Light” is already shaping up to be one of the most ambitious Bond projects in years.
The game is slated for release in 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Windows, and Nintendo Switch 2.
