‘Harry Potter’s Snape Is No Longer the Only Character Who Has Been Played by Actors of Different Ethnicities

The new Harry Potter TV series has been steadily rolling out its cast, and anticipation is high. John Lithgow (Dumbledore), Nick Frost (Hagrid), Dominic McLaughlin (Harry), Alastair Stout (Ron), and Arabella Stanton (Hermione) are among the many actors to have been cast in the upcoming reboot.

Unsurprisingly, fans have their opinions about some of these castings, but one name in the lineup has sparked far more conversation than the rest: Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape.

Essiedu, a British actor with credits in Black Mirror and I May Destroy You, will inherit a role forever tied to the late Alan Rickman. Fans of the original films see Snape as a character defined not only by his complex loyalties but also by Rickman’s unmistakable look and voice. This makes HBO’s decision to cast Essiedu both daring and controversial.

For some fans, the issue lies in the series’ branding. HBO has promised that its version will be a “faithful adaptation” of the novels. But in J.K. Rowling’s books, Snape is described with greasy hair, a hooked nose, and pale, sallow skin, characteristics that many feel Essiedu is physically unable to embody.

Because most other announced actors closely resemble their book counterparts, some viewers argue that Snape’s casting feels inconsistent. On a more positive note, rather than replicating Rickman’s Snape, Essiedu could bring a new dimension to the role.

Known for tackling morally conflicted characters on stage, he has the potential to highlight Snape’s internal struggles in ways the films didn’t fully explore.

Either way, Snape isn’t the only character in the wizarding world to have been played by actors of different ethnicities. Gryffindor student Lavender Brown was portrayed by three different actresses in the Harry Potter films—two actors of color, in fact, before Jessie Cave, the one who’s most synonymous with the role, was cast in later installments.

Hermione Granger is a more famous example. Played by Emma Watson in the films, the character was recast for the stage play Cursed Child, with many actors of color stepping into the role. The initial recasting was not without controversy. Even J.K. Rowling had to step in and defend it at the time, explaining that Hermione’s ethnicity was never revealed in the books.

Ultimately, much of the backlash surrounding Essiedu will likely fade once audiences see his performance in the HBO series. Snape is one of literature’s most complicated figures: loathed, pitied, and admired in equal measure. But if Essiedu can deliver that emotional weight, the conversation could shift from whether he looks the part to whether he embodies it.

HBO’s Harry Potter launches in 2027. Until then, the debate over Snape’s casting will likely remain one of the project’s hottest topics.
