The “shovels in the ground” era at Walt Disney World is moving at an incredible pace. While 2025 was defined by bold announcements, 2026 has quickly become the year of execution. On February 1, 2026, a paper trail of four new construction permits confirmed that Disney’s Hollywood Studios is officially entering its next act.

These filings provide a clear roadmap for the two most immediate projects—the Muppet reimagining of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster and the return of the Magic of Disney Animation—while the shadow of Monstropolis continues to loom over the park’s skyline. If you are planning a visit this year, Hollywood Studios will look and sound completely different.
The Muppets Take Sunset Boulevard: A Coaster Revolution
The most immediate change involves the towering guitar at the end of Sunset Boulevard. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith is officially taking its final bow on March 1, 2026, before closing permanently for its long-awaited Muppet-over.

Three of the four permits filed today are dedicated to this high-speed transformation:
- Elite A/V System Inc. & Solotech: Two permits focused on the massive electrical and audio-visual overhaul required for the ride’s new “psychedelic” lighting and media packages.
- Sign Producers Inc: This permit covers the removal of the classic G-Force Records icons and the installation of the new Muppet-themed marquee and interior set pieces.
The new story features Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem as they race across Hollywood to their biggest concert ever. Guests will walk through a “Muppet-ized” recording studio where Scooter will appear as a high-tech Audio-Animatronic in the pre-show, desperately trying to get the band to the stage on time.
The Return of the Magic of Disney Animation
Across the park, the “Animation Courtyard” is shedding its temporary Star Wars skin to reclaim its soul. The fourth permit, assigned to Design Communications Ltd., is for the installation of signage at the former Star Wars Launch Bay, now rebranded as the Roy E. Disney Animation Building.

This reimagined space, opening in Summer 2026, will feature:
- The Animation Academy: The return of the fan-favorite drawing classes, where guests can learn to sketch Disney legends.
- “Once Upon a Studio” Experience: Inspired by the celebrated short film, this attraction features interactive departments (Story, Layout, Hand-Drawn, etc.) where characters come to life around you.
- A Lush Oasis: In a rare move for Hollywood Studios, multiple mature, majestic trees have been planted in the courtyard this week, transforming the former concrete wasteland into a shaded, Burbank-inspired studio lot.
Monstropolis: The Engine of Change
While the current permits focus on the summer 2026 openings, the context for these moves is the construction of Monstropolis. Located in the former Muppet Courtyard, this massive new land is the reason the Muppets are relocating to Sunset Boulevard.

Work on the Monsters, Inc. “Door Coaster”—Disney’s first-ever suspended roller coaster—is already in high gear. Heavy vertical construction is visible near the back of the park, and the land is expected to anchor the park’s 2027-2028 expansion. By rushing the Muppet Coaster and the Animation Courtyard into service this summer, Disney is ensuring the park maintains enough capacity to handle crowds while Monstropolis remains a major construction zone.
The 2026 Strategy
If you’re visiting this spring, the message is clear: Get your Aerosmith rides in now. With the coaster closing on March 2nd and the Animation building behind walls, wait times for Tower of Terror and Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway will be higher than usual. However, by late summer, Hollywood Studios will feel like a brand-new park—blending the chaos of the Muppets with the classic charm of Disney animation history.
