Disney World Confirms Major Resort Shutdown: Closure and Construction Stretch Into 2028

Walt Disney World guests booking a stay at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge have more than room rates and park tickets to consider. One of Disney’s most distinctive deluxe resorts is undergoing a refurbishment schedule that extends into spring 2028, bringing changes to guest rooms and a temporary closure of its main feature pool.

The resort’s exterior refurbishment is already underway, with work scheduled to continue through late 2026. Additional projects will follow in 2027 and 2028, potentially changing which amenities guests can enjoy during their vacations.

For travelers choosing Wilderness Lodge specifically for its atmosphere, accommodations, and recreation, the timing could make a difference.

Disney’s Wilderness Lodge Construction Continues Through Late 2026

Disney’s Wilderness Lodge has been undergoing exterior refurbishment since August 2024, with work affecting the main hotel and Copper Creek Villas & Cabins at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge.

According to the resort’s refurbishment schedule, that phase is expected to continue through late 2026.

Disney’s official Wilderness Lodge website identifies the property as undergoing construction and refurbishments. The ongoing exterior project may leave guests encountering obstructed views in certain areas, along with visible or audible construction during daytime hours.

That creates a potential inconvenience for visitors expecting the peaceful surroundings associated with the resort’s wilderness-inspired design.

Wilderness Lodge is located in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Resort Area. Its architecture draws inspiration from the historic national park lodges of the American Northwest, incorporating towering timber structures, stonework, and forested surroundings.

Those features help distinguish it from other Disney World hotels. However, exterior refurbishment can affect the views and atmosphere guests encounter, even when their accommodations remain available.

The work is not a resort-wide closure, and the current schedule does not establish that every guest will experience construction-related disturbances.

Still, travelers visiting before the exterior project’s scheduled completion should consider whether the possibility of daytime activity affects their accommodation preferences.

Disney World Schedules Wilderness Lodge Guest Room Refurbishment for 2027

The completion of exterior refurbishment will not mark the end of the scheduled improvements.

Disney has outlined another project involving guest rooms at Wilderness Lodge, with refurbishment scheduled from July through September 2027.

That places the work across three calendar months, including part of the summer vacation season, when families may be planning extended visits to Walt Disney World.

The full scope of the room improvements has not been detailed in the supplied announcement. Disney has not identified every furnishing, fixture, or design element expected to change.

Consequently, there is no confirmation that the project represents a complete redesign of the hotel’s accommodations.

There is also no announcement establishing that every guest room will become unavailable simultaneously or that existing hotel reservations will be canceled.

The distinction matters because scheduled room renovations do not automatically translate into a full hotel shutdown.

The upcoming project follows previous refurbishment activity involving Disney Vacation Club accommodations at the same property.

Copper Creek Villas & Cabins underwent a separate refurbishment during 2025, giving Disney another completed phase in its wider sequence of resort improvements.

Wilderness Lodge is also part of a broader refurbishment pattern across Disney’s deluxe accommodations. Earlier Inside the Magic coverage examined construction projects affecting Disney World’s deluxe resort hotels.

For guests comparing accommodations, the key issue is not simply whether a hotel has undergone renovations. It is whether construction overlaps with the particular dates they intend to visit.

Major Wilderness Lodge Pool Closure Scheduled for Early 2028

Perhaps the most consequential development for families planning a future stay concerns Copper Creek Springs Pool.

Disney has scheduled the resort’s main feature pool for refurbishment beginning in January 2028, with work expected to continue through spring 2028.

The project will temporarily remove access to one of Wilderness Lodge’s signature recreational amenities.

As described on Disney’s official pool information page, Copper Creek Springs Pool features a 67-foot waterslide built into rockwork, whirlpool spas, and an aquatic play area.

These features make it more than a conventional swimming pool. For some families, they are part of the reason to book the resort rather than spend every day inside the theme parks.

Losing access to that experience could change how guests plan their afternoons and resort days.

The closure is temporary, however, and Disney has not announced a precise reopening date beyond the projected spring 2028 timeframe.

Guests should not interpret the refurbishment as a permanent removal of Copper Creek Springs Pool or a closure of every swimming facility at Wilderness Lodge.

Boulder Ridge Cove Pool Offers an Alternative During Refurbishment

Although Copper Creek Springs Pool will be unavailable during its scheduled refurbishment, Wilderness Lodge has another swimming option.

Boulder Ridge Cove Pool is expected to remain accessible during the 2028 project, providing an alternative for visitors who want to spend time in the water.

Disney describes Boulder Ridge Cove as a quieter recreational area, with a zero-depth entry pool, whirlpool spa, and six shaded seating areas available on a first-come, first-served basis.

That gives travelers another option without necessarily requiring them to change hotels.

However, the distinction between the two pools is important.

Copper Creek Springs Pool offers the feature waterslide and aquatic play area, while Boulder Ridge Cove emphasizes a more relaxed swimming environment.

Families with children who particularly enjoy waterslides may therefore experience a more noticeable change than guests primarily interested in swimming or relaxing beside the water.

The closure also does not establish that restaurants, transportation, or the resort’s other recreational facilities will be unavailable.

Wilderness Lodge continues to advertise watercraft and bus transportation as resort amenities. Guests interested in reaching Magic Kingdom can also review earlier coverage of transportation changes involving the Wilderness Lodge boat service.

That previous transportation work is a separate development, not a confirmed consequence of the 2028 pool refurbishment.

What Disney World Guests Should Check Before Booking Through 2028

The refurbishment schedule creates three different considerations depending on when travelers plan to visit.

Guests staying before the end of 2026 may encounter remaining exterior construction. Those arriving between July and September 2027 should account for the scheduled guest room renovations. Visitors booking between January and spring 2028 should plan around the temporary closure of Copper Creek Springs Pool.

For guests considering more than one Disney hotel, these differences may influence which property provides the best fit for their vacation.

Travelers focused primarily on Magic Kingdom access might still find Wilderness Lodge appealing. Those planning several days around the resort’s main pool may place greater importance on the 2028 refurbishment dates.

Transportation arrangements are another consideration. Inside the Magic previously reported changes to the Magic Kingdom resort boat docks, although guests should verify the current dock configuration rather than assume those earlier arrangements will remain in effect during future stays.

The new construction schedule also gives Disney Vacation Club members another reason to review resort-specific notices before selecting their travel dates.

For travelers evaluating prices, Disney’s offers may be worth reviewing alongside the refurbishment timeline. Inside the Magic recently detailed a Disney resort hotel return-guest offer extending into 2027, but applicable exclusions and dates must be checked for each reservation.

Disney has not announced an exact spring 2028 reopening date for Copper Creek Springs Pool. Guests planning future stays should monitor the official resort information and confirm the status of specific amenities before finalizing their reservations.
