The ‘Bluey’ Phenomenon

It’s one of the questions even diehard fans of the children’s program Bluey just cannot seem to answer: what is it that makes the Australian children’s show so popular–not only with children but with adults as well?

Bluey was first commissioned by the BBC and the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) in 2017, with the first episodes being broadcast in 2018. The show, which follows the daily adventures of the Heeler family–Bluey, her younger sister Bingo, and her mom and dad, Chilli and Bandit, was created by Australian animator Joe Brumm and is produced by Ludo Studio.

The show, which celebrates its sixth anniversary this year, continues to grow in popularity among preschool and school-aged children, but the Bluey phenomenon is that the show draws in older children, parents, grandparents, and even adults with no children or with children who are already grown.

The reason for the success of the show, according to its producers, seems to be based on a few things, not the least of which is the program’s ever-engaging episodes that encourage kindness, social skills, and an understanding of what it means to be part of a family.

‘Bluey’ Expands to the Western Hemisphere

In 2018, Disney purchased the broadcasting rights to Bluey, and in 2019, the first episodes of the adorable children’s show were first broadcast in the United States, bringing a whole new hemisphere into the world of Bluey fandom.

Thanks to Disney’s rights to the show, fans can watch episodes of Bluey on Disney Channel, Disney Junior, and on the Disney+ streaming platform. Bluey is now broadcast in 60 countries around the world, and it’s so popular that it has even amassed a laundry list of awards, including the coveted Emmy.

Bluey Finally Gets a Park Debut

Fans of the popular Australian children’s show, which features an outside-the-box approach to learning that involves no reading, no counting, no letters, and no numbers, have asked for years whether Bluey can be found at any of The Walt Disney Company’s global theme parks.

But the company’s rights to Bluey only relate to Disney’s ability to broadcast episodes of the show on its channels and on Disney+. They don’t include rights for the merchandising of Bluey, and as such, Bluey still hasn’t arrived at Disney’s theme parks–not even at Disney World or Disneyland in California, much to fans’ disappointment.

But Bluey and her family are finally making their debut at a theme park in Australia–one that’s being constructed just for them!

Bluey’s World to Open in 2024

A new experience called Bluey’s World is set to open in Brisbane, Australia, in 2024, and according to Andrew Kay, the producer of Bluey’s theater shows, it is a “huge undertaking.”

“Bluey’s World is twice as big as any other immersive experience that’s ever been in Australia,” Kay said. “It creates a world in which children and families can actually experience the whole Bluey world, including the house, the backyard, the creek, and then there’s a whole playground.”

The new themed experience will also include party rooms, perfect for birthday celebrations and other occasions.

A Huge Boost for Australia

Australia Tourism Minister Stirling Hinchliffe says Bluey’s World will be a giant boost to the tourism economy in Queensland.

The new park will reportedly feature soundscape interactive play features, as well as guided experiences, fully immersing guests in episodes of the popular children’s program.

According to the official BlueyTV website, guests of Bluey’s World will be invited to “embark on a special journey with Bluey, Bingo, Bandit, and Chilli” and “immerse themselves in a day in the life of the Heeler family.” The new experience will feature “beloved characters, iconic episode locations, fun interactive games, and delightful surprises.”

“Bringing the Heeler home to life using authentic sets and captivating storytelling. Explore the renowned cul-de-sac, wander through Bluey and Bingo’s bedroom, dive into the living room and playroom, and venture beyond to the backyard under the poinciana tree.”

The new park will also showcase Bluey’s hometown of Brisbane, Queensland.

“As we unfold this exciting news about Bluey, I want us all here today to reflect on the shared experience–that joy sparked by Bluey, it started here,” BBC Studios general manager ANZ Fiona Lang said. “It started in Bluey’s hometown [of] Brisbane, Queensland. It was from Brisbane, Queensland, that we then took Australia by storm and then the rest of the world.”

About Rebekah Tyndall Burkett

Rebekah grew up in Forney, Texas and lives just outside of Dallas. She’s been a Disney superfan since childhood, experiencing the magic at Walt Disney World for the first time at the age of 11. Journeys to Neverland are at least a yearly occurrence for her, her husband and her four children (the Fab Four). When they go to the parks, they stay in Florida for three weeks at a time. Rebekah loves exploring the history of the parks, the genius behind the Magic in the person of Walt Disney, and she is intrigued by all things Disney World and Disney Imagineering. When in the parks, Rebekah and her husband Scott make the most of their time by enjoying every minute with their Fab Four, by delving deeper into Walt’s vision for the parks and into the history behind the Walt Disney World Resort, and by photographing the many different types of architecture at Magic Kingdom, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and on the World Showcase at EPCOT. When she’s not in the parks, Rebekah is excitedly setting travel dates and planning her family’s next adventure to their happy place deep within the Sunshine State. On breaks from planning her next trip, Rebekah is a writer, journalist and children’s author, penning children’s books about kids with special needs that she affectionately calls “believement-achievement” stories. Her hobbies include creative writing, paper crafting and interviewing Imagineers. She is also an advocate for Autism Awareness and for children with developmental disabilities of all kinds.
