Increased incidents at theme parks have led to new policies across the country, and the latest update comes from Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park, CA.
We have seen more instances of fights breaking out among Guests at Walt Disney World and the Disneyland Resort, and Knott’s Berry Farm has been dealing with their own issues resulting from physical altercations between Guests as well. Just last week, Knott’s Berry Farm unexpectedy closed three hours earlier citing “unruly behavior and altercations involving a number of teenagers.”
Now, the theme park is adjusting its property rules to include a chaperone policy, hoping that the new regulation helps to keep this kind of behavior out of the park. With Knott’s policy beginning tomorrow, July 22, 2022, could Disney Parks follow up with a similar policy of their own?

According to the new chaperone policy effective July 22, 2022 at Knott’s Berry Farm, all Guests who are ages 17 or younger must be accompanied by an adult who is 21 or older to enter the Park. IDs will be checked upon entry into the Park, and the chaperoning adult must stay with their party during their visit as minors found without a chaperone will be asked to leave.
Both Walt Disney World and Disneyland currently have the following policy in place:
Children should be supervised. Guests under age 14 must be accompanied by a Guest age 14 or older to enter a theme park or water park. To board an attraction, children under age 7 must be accompanied by a person age 14 years or older.
Disneyland also notes that Guests under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian in the Downtown Disney District after 10:00 p.m.

The difference between the Knott’s Berry Farm and Disney approach to dealing with fights is a fascinating one. Knott’s Berry Farm has had more incidents than Disney Parks, but physical fights between Guests is equally inappopriate in either location.
And, where the staff of Knotts Berry Farm are hoping that a chaperone policy helps with this issue, we have seen time and time again from fights at Walt Disney World and Disneyland that teenagers are not always at fault. In the most recent fight that broke out at the Magic Kingdom last night, July 21, 2022, video footage seems to show nearly all adults involved in a physical altercation right in Fantasyland.

Disney has been known to follow some policies set by other theme parks, most notably during the COVID-19 pandemic if another nearby Park were to announce increased health and safety precautions first. We have not seen Disney take any cues from Knott’s Berry Farm specifically, whether in policy or attractions as the Park is more of a complement than a competitor for Guests visiting Disneyland.
Still, we are interested in seeing how Knott’s new chaperone policy works, and will be sure to report back with updates here on DisneyTips if any changes are announced for Disneyland and Walt Disney World.
