A new version of Jurassic World Rebirth is releasing in just a few weeks.

The seventh installment in the long-running Jurassic Park film series made waves at the box office last summer with $869.1 million worldwide. But it also created a massive ripple effect within the fandom for all the wrong reasons.

Jurassic World Rebirth Wasted a Major Storyline

Directed by Gareth Edwards (Rogue One) and written by franchise veteran David Koepp (Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park), Rebirth takes place five years after the events of 2022’s Jurassic World Dominion to find that dinosaurs are no longer thriving around the world.

The synopsis explains that the “planet’s ecology is no longer hospitable” to the genetically engineered creatures, that only those living near the equator – where the climate resembles the one in which they thrived millions of years ago – have survived. In other words, life didn’t find a way.

It Was Also Filled With Plot Holes

With global dinosaurs out of the way, the film opts for a grab-it-and-go plot, quite the juxtaposition to the ambition and scale of 2018’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Dominion.

Scarlett Johansson’s covert ops expert Zora Bennett leads a big pharma-sponsored expedition to a third InGen island named Île Saint-Hubert, where they must retrieve life-changing DNA from three dinosaurs. Instead, they encounter deadly genetic mutations that have been left to roam free.

Somehow, even with a basic “mission movie” plot, the film was filled with plot holes and left audiences with many unanswered questions. Why was this third InGen island never mentioned in any of the previous films? Why were the scientists there creating mutant dinosaurs? What happened to the facility? What’s with all those ancient ruins scattered throughout the jungle?

But while the bare-bones plot came under heavy criticism, it was the undoing of the global dinosaurs premise that, for many, ruined the film and squandered the vast storytelling potential.

A New Version of Jurassic World Rebirth Is Being Released

While there are rumors of another film being in development, with Edwards and Johansson reportedly in negotiations to return, Universal hasn’t confirmed anything. What has been confirmed, however, is a Jurassic World Rebirth prequel, which was revealed earlier this week.

Frontier Developments has unveiled the Jurassic World Evolution 3: Rebirth Expansion trailer, which confirms the return of the new InGen island and its bizarre mutations. Watch it below:

Released last year, Jurassic World Evolution 3 is the latest entry in the popular park management simulation video game series. “Help life find a way,” the synopsis for the game reads. “Build your own Jurassic World like never before. Nurture generations of awe-inspiring dinosaurs with the series debut of juveniles, create and manage sprawling prehistoric parks around the globe, and let your imagination roar with powerful new creative options.”

While the game has included several different DLCs since launch, the Rebirth expansion is expected to answer many questions about the 2025 film that until now have been left unresolved.

Not only does the official website for the expansion instantly provide more context around mutant dinosaurs such as the Mutadons and the Distortus rex, but it also explains how the game takes place before the “downfall” of Île Saint-Hubert and how players will even “uncover the mysteries of Mayan architecture on the island with towering temples and decorations.”

For many fans, this gap-filling will likely improve the film somewhat.

Jurassic World Evolution 3: Rebirth Expansion will be available for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S from June 16.
