Yesterday, the Desert Sun announced that the city of Rancho Mirage (located between Palm Springs and Palm Desert) approved a tentative tract map for Cotino, a Storyliving by Disney Community. Roughly two hundred houses comprise the section of residential community that was approved.
This Disney venture marks a first for the company. The master-planned community spans 618 acres and also goes by the name Section 31 development.
A 24-acre swimmable lagoon and Resort hotel add to the community, as well as a variety of shopping, dining, and entertainment options. Also included in the plans is a “beachfront” hotel and a beach park with water activities that will be available to the public through the purchase of a day pass.
The decision to approve the houses soon to be built on this portion of Cotino’s property was unanimous. The subdivision involved consists of 70.44 acres that will accommodate 187 single-family homes.
The news was not well received by everyone, as some of the residents in the area tried to push back. They attempted to get commissioners to delay the vote citing drought conditions in the desert right now.
Mary Alexander is partner, executive vice president, and general counsel to DMB Development, the project developer and project manager for property owners. In a statement, she responded, “All landscaping for the 618 acres will be drought tolerant.”
Cotino Storyliving by Disney spans a total of one square mile. The residential community will be built on vacant land once owned by the Annenberg Estate.
In February this year, Disney announced the project and plans to bring this master-planned community to Rancho Mirage. Cotino will include a grand total of 1,700 dwelling units for homeowners of all ages.
At least one section will be allotted for residents 55 and older. With a range of homes to choose from, including estates, single-family homes, and condominiums, this is one exciting project!
