The grim, gloomy facade that has loomed over Liberty Square for more than half a century is no longer visible as construction on the Haunted Mansion continues.
The Haunted Mansion Slowly Disappears
The process began quietly in December 2025, when Walt Disney World Resort began stripping the Haunted Mansion’s graveyard of its themed tombstones and clearing the surrounding landscaping, replacing them with construction walls and markers. Scaffolding followed in the early weeks of 2026. Then a printed scrim went up around the facade — a photo-realistic wrap depicting the attraction’s exterior that kept up appearances while work continued behind it. Even at that stage, the building’s two towers and weathervane still rose visibly above the scrim, giving the Magic Kingdom Park skyline some semblance of its familiar shape.
That’s no longer the case. A dark green scrim now encases both towers as well, leaving only the weathervane poking out from above. WDWNT shared this photo capturing the current state of the building:
Whether the dark green covering will eventually be swapped for a printed version matching the lower wrap remains unknown.
Bigger Changes Coming to This Corner of Magic Kingdom
The exterior work isn’t happening in isolation. Walt Disney World Resort previously filed construction permits suggesting the Haunted Mansion’s facade will ultimately be extended to screen backstage buildings from guest view once the neighboring Piston Peak National Park area opens in Frontierland. The attraction’s overall look and identity in Liberty Square isn’t expected to shift dramatically; the permits point to expansion rather than reinvention.
Piston Peak National Park, the Cars (2006)-inspired addition to Frontierland announced at D23 Expo 2024, is currently rising on the former site of Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America, both of which closed last summer. The new mini-land will draw on the sweeping landscapes of American national parks and introduce two brand-new attractions: a high-energy rally race and a family-friendly ride.
