Disney Guest Comes to the Rescue With Quick Thinking Strategy

What was meant to be a day filled with lightsabers, shows, and smiles at Disney’s Hollywood Studios suddenly transformed into a terrifying scene no one could have prepared for. A group of teens sat sobbing on a bench, panic spreading as guests began to take notice. Lying on the ground nearby was a young girl, motionless—her pulse erratic, her fate hanging in the balance.

In the midst of the chaos, one man stepped forward—calm, composed, and ready to act. But would it be enough to save her life?

A Moment of Panic—and Purpose

Dr. Jeffrey Schiappa, a family medicine physician from Illinois, was vacationing with his wife and son when he noticed the distressed group. His instincts kicked in immediately. Approaching the commotion, he found a 17-year-old girl collapsed and unresponsive.

“I checked her pulse, and it was irregular,” Dr. Schiappa recalled. “We found an AED; Disney has them everywhere.”

Despite having never used the device before, he followed the automated prompts. The first shock yielded no response. The second? Her body jolted—and signs of life returned. Still, she remained unconscious as paramedics rushed to the scene.

As the girl was transported away, Schiappa’s son Joe learned she had been part of a Pennsylvania school band trip. Her classmates were stunned; her family, when reached, was unaware of any medical issues. The reality of what had just occurred hadn’t fully set in yet.

A Hidden Danger Revealed

What came next would put everything into perspective. On the way to the hospital, the teen went into cardiac arrest—twice more. Doctors later diagnosed her with Long QT Syndrome (LQTS), a rare but serious heart rhythm disorder that often goes unnoticed until it’s nearly too late.

LQTS can cause sudden, irregular heartbeats and may trigger fainting, seizures, or even sudden death—especially under stress or excitement. In this case, it took the adrenaline of a theme park and a near-tragedy to uncover the silent condition.

“She could’ve died,” Schiappa reflected. “If this had happened after graduation while she was away at college, she might not have survived. I’m just so thankful I saw what was happening.”

A Message That Stays With You

Thanks to swift action and the availability of an AED device, the young woman was not only revived but later fitted with a pacemaker to prevent future episodes. She is reportedly doing well, and her grateful family has since reached out to thank Schiappa with a heartfelt message.

As for Schiappa, while his vacation resumed, the memory didn’t fade.

“What we did was successful, thank God,” he said. “I still think about it.”

Why This Matters: More Than Just a Vacation Story

Beyond the emotional high of a life saved, this story brings attention to something far greater: the lifesaving value of AED devices in public spaces and the power of being prepared. Disney World’s decision to place AEDs throughout the parks may have made the difference between life and death.

It’s also a stark reminder that invisible conditions like Long QT Syndrome can lurk quietly, revealing themselves only under extreme circumstances. Thanks to one doctor’s quick thinking—and a little help from technology—a family was spared the unthinkable.

About Emmanuel Detres

Since first stepping inside the Magic Kingdom at nine years old, I knew I was destined to be a theme Park enthusiast. Although I consider myself a theme Park junkie, I still have much to learn and discover about Disney. Universal Orlando Resort has my heart; being an Annual Passholder means visiting my favorite places on Earth when possible! When I’m not writing about Disney, Universal, or entertainment news, you’ll find me cruising on my motorcycle, hiking throughout my local metro parks, or spending quality time with my girlfriend, family, or friends.
