Disney Crowds Vanish, Theme Parks “Total Ghost Town” as Summer Begins

Summer has arrived at Disneyland Resort, but the crowds many guests expected haven’t followed.

When you visit Disneyland Resort, long waits are usually part of the experience. Even with Lightning Lane helping guests skip some of the busiest queues, summer typically brings some of the highest crowd levels of the year as schools break up and families head to Southern California. June is often viewed as the start of Disneyland’s peak season, making shorter wait times and lighter crowds particularly unexpected.

However, guests are claiming that this isn’t the case right now – especially during the weekends.

Disney Parks Are Light On Crowds Right Now

On Reddit, one guest shared a picture from the Toy Story Lot, which looks particularly barren for a Saturday in June.

The guest added that Disneyland was a “total ghost town” today.

Others have shared similar experiences, as well as offering explanations as to why crowds are light right now: lower tier Passholders are currently blocked out.

“Was there yesterday and crowds were surprisingly low for a Friday!” one guest wrote on Reddit. “Wait times for fantasyland rides were 5-10 mins almost all day and there noticeably less people than on Thursday.”

Another wrote, “Saturdays in summer have been this way for several years now. You mix a super expensive tier for tickets due to dynamic pricing + block almost all the magic keys, means… it’s delightful.”

Images from New Orleans Square – typically one of the most congested areas of the park – also showed a surprisingly barren space (although it’s worth noting that the land’s biggest draw, Pirates of the Caribbean, is currently closed for refurbishment.

Got there right at 8, by 11am, we rode Space Mountain, Thunder Mountain, Tiana’s Bayou, Matterhorn, Alice in Wonderland, Indiana Jones and the Mark Twain boat,” wrote a guest who visited on Friday. “We left by 4 since there wasn’t much to do and it got so hot.”

Others reported similar scenes in Downtown Disney, Disneyland Resort’s shopping and dining district.

According to Thrill Data, the average wait time at Disneyland Park as of 3 p.m. PST is just 18 minutes.

Also worth considering is the impact of the FIFA World Cup, which is currently underway in the United States. Los Angeles is hosting eight matches at SoFi Stadium, with the first (United States vs. Paraguay) taking place yesterday.

Major sporting events would typically be expected to boost tourism, but Disneyland Paris saw the opposite effect during the 2024 Summer Olympics, when some guests delayed trips or avoided the resort altogether due to concerns about larger crowds and higher prices.

Have you experienced low crowds at Disneyland this week?
