Despite what you may think, cold and flu season is not yet over in the United States.

Norovirus, a highly contagious virus causing gastrointestinal illness, has been increasingly prevalent across the United States. This trend is particularly alarming in popular tourist destinations like Disney, where large crowds and close interactions could amplify the risk of outbreaks.

With Spring break tourists pouring into theme parks this spring, including Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort, people have raised concerns about disease control and public health measures within these iconic establishments.

CDC Informs Public of Norovirus Surge

Norovirus, a terrible stomach virus, is surging right now in the United States, reaching the highest levels since last April. Also known as “the stomach flu,” Norovirus is the worst nightmare for families trying to travel this springtime. With thousands of guests going on their Disney vacations right now, it is a good idea to stay vigilant on personal safety measures.

The CDC has recommended frequent handwashing and the use of hand sanitizers to prevent the spread of the virus among Americans this early spring. The symptoms of norovirus infection, such as vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and abdominal discomfort, can quickly ruin a Disney trip or experience if proper precautions are not taken.

Disney safety measures have always been a top priority, especially when it comes to protecting guests from illnesses like norovirus at Disney. With the large volume of visitors that frequent Disney parks and resorts, ensuring cleanliness and hygiene is paramount. Additionally, Disney promotes hand hygiene by strategically placing hand sanitizer stations throughout their parks and resorts to encourage guests to regularly sanitize their hands, which helps reduce the spread of illnesses like norovirus.

What to Do if You Get Sick

If you, unfortunately, do get sick while on a Disney vacation, Disney has some steps to follow. They say:

“If a member of your travel party is feeling unwell and needs to see a health care provider, there are a few options. If you are in the theme park, you can visit the First Aid center in each of the theme parks to speak with a nurse. If you are in your Disney Resort hotel, you can request in-room medical services by calling the Front Desk of your Resort. Guests can also receive complimentary transportation to a Centra Care Urgent Care clinic. This service can be arranged through the First Aid center in the theme parks, at the Front Desk of your Disney Resort hotel, or by calling the number listed for AdventHealth.”

Disney is incredibly diligent about making sure that their health protocols are incredibly stringent. Overall, staying informed about norovirus symptoms, practicing good personal hygiene, and being vigilant about food safety are essential steps in minimizing the risk of contracting this unpleasant stomach flu during travels to places like Disney or while on a cruise.
