Disneyland’s New Policy: Charging for Ice Cubes To Manage Guest Behavior

Disneyland Resort has started charging $6.79 for its Halloween glow cubes, which some Southern California Disney Park guests view as a failed attempt to stop reselling. The reusable ice cubes, which the Disney parks historically included in more expensive cocktails, have sold on eBay for as much as $80.

While Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort have occasionally charged for beverage accessories like glow cubes and straw clips, this is the most expensive they’ve been. The items are also limited to two per transaction, which has done little to stop reselling.

u/snpdrkid recently posted about the glow cubes on Reddit–specifically Kuzco’s Poison Bottle Glow Cube, inspired by The Emperor’s New Groove (2000). They found the $6.79 upcharge on top of the cost of a beverage “upsetting”:

Reselling sucks but the upcharge on the Kuzko cube is upsetting…

While other Southern California Disney Parks fans saw the rationale behind the decision, they said Disneyland Resort needed to do more than increase prices and institute lax purchase limits.

“They’ve gotta start controlling how many can be bought per person,” u/vegascoaster commented. “Also not sure how many they made, but clearly missed the mark by a mile on how popular these would be. Was hoping they would restock daily / weekly, but [we] were told…they made a certain amount and sold out for the season within the first week.”

“We went in September,” u/Reyzillah replied. “One week after the merch came out and a cast member told me they sold out of the poison vile glow cubes park-wide the first day!!!! I couldn’t believe it. I collect glow cubes and I was so disappointed. People suck.”

Others felt Disneyland Resort didn’t actually care about stopping resellers.

“Disney clearly benefits from resellers since they won’t do anything about it and then turn around and up charge?” said u/unavailable_emotionz. “I can’t with their greed.”
