The Walt Disney Company recently made headlines for comments during their fiscal third quarter 2022 financial results meeting. The conference was broadcast live via audio webcast, and fans eagerly listened in, hoping to glean information behind some of Disney’s recent moves.
One of the most controversial comments regarded attendance at Disneyland Resort. As of the day of the conference, August 10, Magic Keys were still not released for renewal, with no word from Disney on if they’d return.
Fans were given insight into Disney’s thought process on the matter when the financial report stated,
“The increase in average per capita ticket revenue was due to the introduction of Genie+ and Lightning Lane in the first quarter of the current fiscal year and a reduced impact from promotions at Walt Disney World Resort, partially offset by an unfavorable attendance mix at Disneyland Resort.”
Loyal Southern California Park goers did not appreciate the insensitive commentary. Annual Passholders took to social media to criticize Disney’s theories, maintaining that they could not possibly be the cause of negative financial drawbacks.
Some of their arguments countered that although Disneyland Magic Key holders may not buy as much when it comes to hotels and food, their consistent visitation compensates, making their purchases more valuable than one-day ticket holders.
After the meeting, Magic Keys were reinstated, but there was a catch. Along with additional restrictions and blockout dates for all four options, the Annual Passes could only be renewed, not purchased.
