Could ‘Doctor Who’ Be Coming to Disney+?

Disney+ has been gaining lots of incredible titles recently, and for fans of the hit BBC series Doctor Who, more exciting news could be on the horizon.

Doctor Who has been a staple of the British Broadcasting Corporation’s programming since the series was originally launched in 1963. The first version of the science fiction show continued for 26 years coming to an end in 1989 before the current iteration of Doctor Who picked up with the ninth Doctor, played by Christopher Eccleston in 2005.

For fans of the show who do not have cable, or who need to catch up on the latest Doctors, we are excited to share that there are whispers that the series may be coming to Disney+!

Bloomberg reported that the Walt Disney Company is in talks with the BBC to work out potentially acquiring the streaming rights to a new Doctor Who series. As Bloomberg notes in its original report, no details have been finalized and it is unclear what exactly the new series would entail if the move does end up happening.

Fans of the series would likely appreciate the opportunity to rewatch past episodes, especially as many recommend starting with the 2005 season, or the ninth Doctor, if a viewer is new to Doctor Who in general. It is unclear from the preliminary talks that have taken place thus far if this potential new series would be a continuation of the current one, and if past Doctors’ episodes would also be included.

Doctor Who is a major property for the BBC, which results in millions of viewers each year, and has spawned a 40+ year fandom with merchandise, conventions, special events, and more. All of this to say, the BBC would probably need a worthwhile offer from Disney to let the property move to a new streaming platform.

Disney+ has been adding a lot of new titles switch a packed list of Marvel films and series just announced at San Diego Comic-Con for years to come as well as its first R-Rated titles with Logan (2017) and Deadpool (2016).

Returning for a eleventh series in 2018, the reinvigorated sci-fi drama looks set to continue delighting audiences of all ages with its tales of an intrepid time traveller and her battles against alien invasions and meddling humans.
