Dollywood then pointed to Parton’s work ethic as another defining part of her legacy.
“In her spirit, Dollywood will be open Wednesday as Dolly wanted, always reminding everyone with her signature sparkle — ‘the show must go on.'”
That decision could be an emotional one for employees and guests alike.

Dolly Wanted Dollywood to Keep Bringing People Together

Parton’s relationship with Dollywood stretches back to 1986, when she became a co-owner alongside Herschend.

Her Health Had Already Changed Her Role at the Park
Earlier this month, she was scheduled to attend the opening celebration for NightFlight Expedition at Dollywood. Instead, she appeared through a prerecorded video after her doctor advised her not to travel.
Parton apologized to those gathered and explained that she sometimes experienced dizziness and dehydration.
“I get a little dizzy and I get dehydrated,” she said.
She also joked that her doctor had “clipped my wings” and told her she could not travel that week.
NightFlight Expedition officially opened August 19 and represents one of Dollywood’s biggest recent additions.
The attraction’s opening was significant for the park, but Parton’s absence was impossible to overlook given how personally involved she had traditionally been with Dollywood.
Her recent health struggles had already forced her to step away from several appearances and projects.
Parton had previously told PEOPLE that she was experiencing “some hard times with my health.” She also explained that she had been dealing with health problems she had neglected while caring for her late husband, Carl Thomas Dean, who died in 2025.
