Fantasmic! is one of the most beloved nighttime spectaculars at Disney Parks, allowing Guests to see Mickey Mouse himself as he works to save his dream from some of the most sinister villains.

The show operates at both Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World and Disneyland Park at the Disneyland Resort; however, a recent incident at the Anaheim location recently caused several updates felt on both coasts.

Last month, Fantasmic! at Disneyland Park underwent an unfortunate incident when the Maleficent dragon (nicknamed, “Murphy”) caught on fire during a performance. While no performers, Cast Members, or firefighters were injured during the fire, and Guests were all safely evacuated from the area, photos of the incident’s aftermath showed the Dragon figure destroyed beyond repair.

As expected, Disney initially announced that performances of Fantasmic! at Disneyland would be paused, while at Walt Disney World, the fire effect was briefly removed from the Maleficent dragon in the Magic Kingdom’s Festival of Fantasy Parade. (Ironically, the dragon in the parade also caught fire during an incident in 2018.)

In the weeks since the latest Maleficent fire, Disney has issued a statement on the status of the show. Theme park reporter Scott Gustin obtained the following statement from the company while also noting that Fantasmic! at Disneyand will remain paused until at least Labor Day 2023.

We are taking this time to evaluate the show and explore opportunities to add new magic and touches for Guests to enjoy.

The official Disneyland website also notes:

Performances of Fantasmic! are currently paused. We know our Guests love and miss Fantasmic!, and Disneyland Resort teams are working hard to assess when we can bring back an adjusted show as quickly and safely as possible.

Evening entertainment at Disneyland

Wondrous Journeys, Disneyland’s current fireworks show, is a special addition this year for Disney100 with a heartwarming event showcasing the past 100 years of Disney history.

And Disney California Adventure uses lighted waterjets, lasers, and pyrotechnics during World of Color to present memorable moments from iconic Disney and Pixar films.

While we wait to learn more about the return of Fantasmic! be sure to download the Disneyland app for current fireworks and World of Color showtimes during your next trip.
