It is always unfortunate when a favorite food item disappears from menus, especially when it was such an iconic and memorable snack from past trips to Walt Disney World.
Sometimes Disney fans can luck out and see an “extinct” menu item pop up once again at a new location or under a new name. This has long been the case with snack items from around the Parks with items like the cream-cheese stuffed pretzel for instance disappearing only briefly and returning at new snack kiosks. Unfortunately, this does not always happen, and if it does there is no guarantee that our favorite snacks will stick around for good.
If you have been visiting Walt Disney World for a number of years, you may remember an iconic quick-service menu item in the Magic Kingdom, called “Figaro Fries.” They were once available at Pinocchio Village Haus, a quick service restaurant located in Fantasyland.
Figaro Fries were topped with lettuce, tomato, melted cheese, bacon, and ranch dressing, and they were delicious. Perhaps not the most well-known Magic Kingdom snack, these loaded fries did have quite the following so plenty of Guests noticed when they were removed permanently from the menu in 2010.
Six years later, Guests had moved on from the loss of this savory Magic Kingdom treat when Disney updated the menu at the Plaza Restaurant to include something familiar. “Plaza Loaded Fries” as they were listed on the menu beginning in 2016 included “French Fries topped with Melted Cheese, Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato, and Ranch Dressing.” And just like that, Figaro Fries were back!
The new Figaro Fries, aka Plaza Loaded Fries, were less accessible than their predecessor as they had moved to a table-service restaurant where Guests might need a reservation (and extra time) to enjoy them, but fans of the old menu item at Pinocchio Village Haus were thrilled to see them return.
Sadly, with the most recent update to the Plaza Restaurant’s menu, the french fry appetizer changed and the Magic Kingdom is once again left without Figaro Fries. The newly updated version of the Plaza Loaded Fries includes, “Crispy Fries, Melted Cheddar, House-made Bacon, Green Onion, and Spicy Sour Cream.”
Figaro Fries are certainly easy to replicate given the basic ingredients, so it is possible that a Cast Member could modify the current Plaza Loaded Fries to make it work but where the ingredients on the menu have changed we are sorry to share the news that this classic snack is at least “officially” gone from the Magic Kingdom.
In 2014, a version of loaded fries similar to Figaro Fries appeared at the Golden Oak Outpost in Frontierland, but they were later replaced with other toppings. This kiosk currently has “Walt’s Chili Cheese Fries” available as a 50th anniversary snack, so perhaps next year we will see the return of Figaro Fries to Frontierland.
Still hoping for Figaro Fries after all these years? Some Guests have made their own by ordering a side of “plastic cheese” at quick-service restaurants that offer it and adding toppings that could come alongside a burger to replicate the dish.
