What’s Going On With Genie+ at Walt Disney World?

Disney Genie+ can make or break your Walt Disney World vacation depending on several factors, like how you use it, and how much it costs or whether it is even available at all during your trip.

When Genie+ debuted in 2021, the replacement to Disney’s FastPass+ system was held at a steady pricepoint and available as a ticket add-on that Guests could purchase well in advance of their vacations. With updates to the system like the introduction of dynamic pricing, a move toward same-day purchases, and the ability for Genie+ to sell out altogether, Genie+ has changed dramatically since it was introduced.

The official terms of Genie+ have long stated that the entire program is subject to availability (AKA, it could sell out.) While this has not been much of a problem for most Guests, it is worth noting that this aspect of the service is always changing as Genie+ has sold out two days in a row during the most recent holiday weekend.

During the second day of consecutive sellouts, Genie+ was also priced at a record high of $30 per person (keep in mind, this is double the original price of the service as it launched at $15 per person.)

Pricing has gone down as of today, Tuesday, February 21, 2023, with the My Disney Experience app currently listing Genie+ for $22 per person. When it comes to pricing, we also need to consider the individual Lightning Lane attractions that are not included in Genie+.

Noting this, we can estimate that as an example, a family of four visiting EPCOT today could spend $88 for everyone to have Genie+, plus an additional $60 to ride Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, bringing their total spend on attractions after already purchasing Park tickets to $148 for just one day.

Is Genie+ worth it in its current state? This is one question that is still up for debate as some Guests swear by the system as a way to save time waiting in line for hit attractions, noting that what you can get out of the service outweighs the cost. Others are still reminiscing the old, complimentary, FastPass+ system that while flawed offered a similar service for free.

While Genie+ availability and pricing continues to fluctuate, we recommend using the higher end of estimates to plan your budget for your next Disney vacation (of $30 for Genie+ and $22 for an individual Lightning Lane.) Since pricing is not available until the day of your visit, budgeting on the higher end will help you be prepared, whatever the cost might be.

Whatever happens with Genie+, the service is not going anywhere. Disney executives have already regarded Genie+ as a success, and individual Lightning Lane purchases have been the only way to ride new attractions when virtual queues fill up.

As for your chances of Genie+ selling out, we will continue to monitor these trends and will report back with more details as they are available here on Disney Tips.
