On February 13, a major shake-up at EPCOT left guests frustrated and confused when Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind unexpectedly shut down. With no immediate explanation from Walt Disney World Resort, many visitors were left wondering whether one of Disney’s most high-tech attractions had finally hit a breaking point.

EPCOT’s Most Ambitious Ride Suddenly Goes Dark

When Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind opened in May 2022, it was touted as one of Disney’s most thrilling and immersive roller coasters. The first-ever reverse launch coaster in Disney history, it quickly became a favorite among parkgoers thanks to its spinning ride vehicles and randomized soundtrack, featuring hits like “Conga” by Miami Sound Machine and “September” by Earth, Wind & Fire.

But on Thursday morning, guests expecting an intergalactic adventure instead found themselves locked out of the attraction entirely. According to reports, EPCOT quietly closed the ride without issuing an official statement.

Confusion and Frustration for Disney Park Guests

Guests with Virtual Queue and Lightning Lane Single Pass reservations for the ride were among the first to notice something was wrong. Redditor u/dizzlvizzl shared a screenshot of the My Disney Experience app, showing that the ride was listed as “temporarily closed.”

Finally got in the virtual queue for Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and saw this,” the Disney Park guest added. “Today is our last day at Disney, so hopefully we will get a chance.”

Other Disney Parks fans were quick to explain that this wasn’t the first time the coaster had experienced technical issues.

“Sucks, but I mean rides go down,” u/Silicon_Knight wrote. “It’s not really a new thing. IIRC they will still honour your reservation or let you ride something else if it’s not up.”

“They’ll honor your queue later,” u/HeirofZeon replied. “This happens multiple times pretty much every day.”

Walt Disney World Resort remained silent on the reasoning behind the closure.

Thankfully for guests, the closure wasn’t permanent—by Thursday afternoon, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind was back up and running. Despite the abrupt shutdown, EPCOT’s first-ever roller coaster resumed normal operations before the end of the day.

For now, guests hoping to ride the Guardians of the Galaxy coaster still need to secure a Virtual Queue or Lightning Lane Single Pass reservation, with sign-ups available daily at 7:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. through the My Disney Experience app. Guests must be at EPCOT to register during the afternoon Virtual Queue window.

  1. It is expected that any of the attractions will shutdown .momentarily, day or week. Disney does not do maintenance like they use too.
When we came in the 80s it was not like it is now.
When the parks closed, maintenance started.
Not so now. Preventative instead of reactive.
The parks are going the wrong direction and is getting less and less of my time and money.
It is a roll of the dice what is working, shutdown due to “offensive attraction” bs or being refurbished.
Not the vision the Disney Boys had.
    Woke and Broke.
    If I offended you, fabulous!
