Disney has long been known for its larger-than-life nighttime shows, offering guests the chance to experience stunning visuals paired with beloved music and characters. For its upcoming 70th anniversary, Disneyland Resort is introducing a new level of personalization, allowing guests to influence the show and create a unique performance each night.

World of Color, a crowd favorite at Disney California Adventure, debuted in 2010. It quickly became a staple, combining water, lights, and music in a visually stunning display.

The most recent version, World of Color – One, was introduced as part of Disney’s centennial celebrations in 2023. Featuring characters from Disney’s extensive catalog, including Pixar, Lucasfilm, and Marvel, it was a tribute to 100 years of entertainment. However, despite its impressive spectacle, it didn’t resonate with fans as much as previous iterations.

Disney Prepares a New Version of World of Color

To bring in something fresh, Disney is debuting a new nighttime spectacular: World of Color: Happiness! This show will open on May 16, 2025, and is designed around a theme of joy, inspired by Walt Disney’s famous dedication speech. It promises to offer a visually enhanced experience, with new effects like lasers, fog, and flame projections.

The show will feature a variety of films, including Frozen (2013), The Lion King (1994), A Goofy Movie (1995), Tangled (2010), and Turning Red (2022). A Muppets pre-show will kick things off, followed by Boyz II Men’s cover of Rainbow Connection, and an original song by FITZ, “Makes Me Wanna Move,” adding a modern twist to the classic.

Guests Gain Control of Nighttime Spectacular

For the first time, Disney is letting guests personalize the show each night. Before the performance, they can vote via the Disneyland app for one of four emotions from Inside Out: Sadness, Anger, Disgust, or Envy. The emotion with the most votes will influence the evening’s scenes, making each performance unique.

A notice on the Disneyland Resort website reads:

Vote & Emote! You Could Influence the Show
Before the first World of Color performance of the evening, Guests within Disney California Adventure Park can vote for an Inside Out emotion to get a special spotlight in the show that night.

Vote via the Disneyland app for Sadness, Anger, Disgust or Envy—then find out the results when you watch World of Color Happiness!

Quick Tip: Enable location services and push notifications in the Disneyland app, so you don’t miss your chance to vote.

Guests will be able to cast one vote per day, ensuring a different experience each time they visit. While Joy is notably absent from the choices, there is a very important reason why: she’s the host, joined by other emotions (with those missing from the voting lineup presumably those making heavy appearances in the rest of the show).

Five animated characters express different emotions in a colorful, futuristic setting. A glowing character in the center illustrates joy, surrounded by others showing fear, anger, and sadness. The scene is vibrant and energetic.

This interactive element follows Disney’s success with audience-driven content. In 2024, it introduced an Inside Out 2 (2024) pre-show for World of Color – One. With the success of the sequel, which grossed $1.7 billion globally, Disney continues to tap into this franchise’s popularity for engaging new experiences.

World of Color: Happiness! offers something entirely new for Disney fans. By blending interactive voting, stunning visuals, and beloved films, the show promises to be an unforgettable experience. Guests now have the chance to shape the magic and enjoy a personalized, ever-changing spectacle every time they attend.
