‘Hocus Pocus 2’ Becomes the #1 Premiere on Disney+, Is a Third Film Possible?

Fans of the cult classic Halloween film Hocus Pocus (1993) had been waiting for a sequel for nearly 30 years, and this fall, their wishes were finally granted thanks to Disney+.

With the premiere of the sequel to the original tale of the Sanderson Sisters’ return to Salem via black flame candle so highly anticipated and with social media abuzz with Hocus Pocus watch parties for the premiere, it is no surprise that the sequel debuted at #1 on Disney’s streaming platform.

Hocus Pocus 2 might be receiving mixed reviews from fans, with some feeling like the film is missing some important elements that made the original so memorable and others declaring the sequel even better than the 1993 theatrical release, but one thing is for sure: Mixed reviews might be the case, but it is not changing viewership.

The film features Disney Legend Bette Midler, as she reprises her role as Winifred Sanderson alongside her sister witches Sarah (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Mary (Kathy Najimy), with additional casting including Sam Richardson, Doug Jones, Whitney Peak, Belissa Escobedo, Lilia Buckingham, and Froy Gutierrez, with Tony Hale and Hannah Waddingham.

The success of Hocus Pocus 2 is certainly exciting for fans of the original story, especially as they are often now able to share a new version of Hocus Pocus with their children to keep the tradition of this Halloween classic going. And, with Disney now recognizing the success of the highly anticipated sequel, we have to wonder if a trilogy could be a possibility for Hocus Pocus. Warning: Spoilers ahead if you haven’t yet watched Hocus Pocus 2

The plot of Hocus Pocus 2, and particularly the film’s ending, seem to be setting up the story to work if a third film were to ever happen. By the final scenes of the film, we learn that Becca (played by Whitney Peak) is a witch herself. Not only does she possess her own powers that even rival those of the Sanderson Sisters, but Book is drawn to her as well. And (again, spoilers ahead) the film’s post-credits scene continues the possibility that a third film could happen, as another black flame candle is shown inside the Magic Shop.

How possible is a third film? Well, we can’t say for sure until Disney announces something official, but it definitely is not outside of the realm of possibility. In general, Disney has become much more responsive to producing sequels within a reasonable timeline of the original film. Just look at Frozen (2013) and Frozen 2 (2019), and Wreck-It Ralph (2012) and Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018). Fans have also speculated that a sequel to Encanto (2021) could be coming, especially since Disney CEO Bob Chapek referred to the film as a “franchise” during a company earnings call.

We will continue to monitor any news on the possibility of another Hocus Pocus film here on Disney Tips. While we wait for the potential third installment, however, we’ll be joining the likes of Disney fans across the country in rewatching both films throughout spooky season!
