Jurassic World Rebirth (2025) isn’t even out yet, and already the inevitable follow-up, Jurassic World Rebirth Part 2, if you will, reeks of outlandishness. But frankly, after everything we’ve seen from the series over the last decade, it wouldn’t be all that surprising.
Let’s rewind. The Jurassic World trilogy introduced anthropomorphized dinosaurs, two dino-hybrid knowns, laser-guided raptors, a human clone, and super locusts. So it’s fair to say that, somewhere between the original film, Jurassic Park (1993), and the latest sequel, Jurassic World Dominion (2022), the series has veered off the rails into sci-fi madness.
Now, with Jurassic World Rebirth, we’ve officially entered a new era: mutant dinosaurs.
As revealed in a recent Empire Magazine exclusive, the new film will feature the “Distortus Rex”—described by director Gareth Edwards as a mix between a Xenomorph from Alien and a Rancor from Star Wars (and a T-Rex, apparently). But that’s not a dinosaur.
Then there are the “Mutadons”. Winged, aggressive, and spliced from raptor and pterosaur DNA. “Those came from my strange mind,” says screenwriter David Koepp, who penned the first two films in the series, Jurassic Park (1993) and The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997).
With each entry, the Jurassic franchise has consistently moved further away from author Michael Crichton’s cautionary tale about tampering with nature. Of course, genetic mutations are still technically on brand, but it’s becoming increasingly difficult to imagine Jurassic World Rebirth as an actual extension of the original Jurassic Park.

And where does a story go after mutant dinos, clones, and bug-based bio-terrorism? You guessed it: space. It’s been the go-to last resort for exhausted franchises—Leprechaun, Friday the 13th, Fast & Furious. They all did it. And now, Jurassic is primed to join them.
Jurassic World Rebirth follows a team sent to a new island to recover world-changing dinosaur DNA. Naturally, everything goes sideways. But even with the star power of Scarlett Johansson (Avengers: Endgame) and Mahershala Ali (The Green Book), there’s no denying this story’s starting to feel familiar. Another island. Another lab. Another mistake.
If the dinosaurs keep evolving, maybe their next enclosure really is orbital. A bio-weapons lab in space. A dino comet mission gone wrong. It doesn’t even sound that crazy anymore.
Jurassic World Rebirth opens July 2, 2025. After that? Get your zero-gravity helmets ready.
