‘Jurassic World Rebirth’s Mutant Dinos Are Just the Beginning, Future Sequels Likely to Experiment With Human Hybrids

Jurassic World Rebirth (2025) may be intended as a standalone film for now, but let’s be honest: this is the start of a new trilogy. And judging by the monsters on display, we’re only at the tip of the genetic iceberg.

The next logical step? Human-dino hybrids. They’re not just likely—they’re inevitable.

As revealed in a new Empire exclusive, the new film will unleash the “Distortus Rex” — the big creature you see in the trailer — which director Gareth Edwards describes as “kind of like if the T-Rex was designed by H.R. Giger [the artist who designed Alien‘s Xenomorph], and then that whole thing had sex with a Rancor [from Star Wars].”

Alongside it are the “Mutadons,” flying Raptor-pterosaur mashups that, just like the Distortus Rex, sound like they belong in a kaiju movie (it’s no coincidence that Edwards helmed the 2014 Godzilla reboot).

Every Jurassic trilogy has a shape. The original Jurassic Park films focused on both the wonder and terror of genetically engineered dinosaurs. Simple. The Jurassic World trilogy went from commercialization to militarization to genetic madness.

Now, if Jurassic World Rebirth is a starting point for another series of films, then its sequels have only one place to go: the blending of human and dinosaur.

The idea of human-dino hybrids has hovered like a ghost in this franchise for decades. But now, with each new creature further removed from any fossil record, and with Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’s human clone Maisie Lockwood (Isabella Sermon) in the mix, it feels like the series is actively laying the groundwork for the worst kind of genetic creature.

It might sound extreme, but in a series where raptors follow laser pointers and dinosaurs are auctioned like antiques, extremity is the baseline for the Jurassic series these days. If we’re lucky, the next film won’t have a talking raptor in a lab coat. But don’t bet against it.
