Lucasfilm Makes Unexpected ‘Star Wars’ Move With New ‘Mandalorian’ Prequel Project

The galaxy’s most famous duo isn’t going anywhere.

For much of the past decade, Star Wars has struggled to produce a character as instantly popular as Grogu. The small Force-sensitive foundling quickly became the face of a new era for Lucasfilm after debuting in The Mandalorian in 2019.

Alongside Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal), Grogu helped transform Disney+ into a destination for Star Wars storytelling. The series introduced audiences to a corner of the galaxy far removed from the Skywalker saga, earning critical acclaim and becoming one of the franchise’s biggest streaming successes.

Since then, Lucasfilm has continued building stories around the pair. Their adventures crossed over into The Book of Boba Fett before eventually leading to The Mandalorian and Grogu, the franchise’s return to theaters after several years away from the big screen.

The movie represented a significant moment for Star Wars.

Lucasfilm had spent years developing theatrical projects that were delayed, reworked, or canceled. The Mandalorian and Grogu ultimately became the studio’s first theatrical release since 2019, putting considerable attention on its performance.

Despite mixed discussion surrounding the film’s middling box office results, Lucasfilm appears to have little interest in moving away from its most recognizable modern characters.

Din Djarin and Grogu Get Another Adventure

A newly announced publishing project will send the pair on an entirely new mission.

Mad Cave Studios and Papercutz, working alongside Lucasfilm Publishing, have revealed Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu — Danger in the Dark.

The release is being promoted as “the first-ever original comic one-shot starring The Mandalorian duo Din Djarin and Grogu.”

Rather than revisiting events already seen on screen, the comic tells a standalone story featuring the bounty hunter and his young companion.

According to the official synopsis, the pair answers a distress call from a remote world. Their mission soon turns dangerous as they uncover a mysterious threat lurking beneath the planet’s surface.

The comic is written by Steve Orlando, with artwork by Alessandro Santoro and colors by Fabi Marques.

Lucasfilm Continues Expanding Its Biggest Disney+ Success

The announcement is notable because it arrives at a time when Lucasfilm is still evaluating the future of its theatrical slate.

Several Star Wars movies remain in development, including Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter – which hits theaters next summer – and, theoretically, Daisy Ridley’s return as Rey. At the same time, the company continues expanding stories through books, comics, and streaming content.

Publishing has become an increasingly important part of that strategy.

Comics have regularly been used to explore stories involving Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and other major Star Wars characters. The format allows Lucasfilm to fill narrative gaps while keeping popular characters active between larger releases.

Now Din Djarin and Grogu are receiving the same treatment.

The new comic serves as a prequel to the film, adding another chapter to one of the franchise’s most successful modern storylines.

For fans, it means the journey between the Mandalorian bounty hunter and his adopted apprentice will continue beyond television and theaters.

Lucasfilm may be charting the future of Star Wars in multiple directions, but Din Djarin and Grogu remain firmly at the center of the plan.
