Magic Kingdom Park’s ferry system will receive its most significant expansion since 2014 after the South Florida Water Management District approved Walt Disney World Resort’s construction permit on March 24.
The project updates infrastructure on the 54-year-old transportation system connecting Magic Kingdom Park to the Transportation & Ticket Center (and its parking lots) across the Seven Seas Lagoon, expanding queue areas and boarding facilities for guests waiting to cross the water.
Decades of Gradual Improvements
Ferries have transported Magic Kingdom guests since the park opened in 1971. Walt Disney World Resort added a second dock at both Magic Kingdom and Transportation & Ticket Center in 2014, doubling capacity. In 2021, second-level unloading capability allowed upper-deck passengers to exit without descending stairs, accelerating the disembarkation process.
The newly approved expansion continues efficiency improvements by increasing queue space and implementing the infrastructure updates requested by Walt Disney World Resort in the early 2025 permit filing.
The permit includes creating a floodplain compensation area—Disney must establish equivalent wetland or water management space elsewhere on the property to offset the environmental impact from the dock expansion. This requirement is standard for Florida construction affecting water bodies.
Construction Timeline Unknown
Walt Disney World Resort hasn’t announced when work begins. The Central Florida Disney park operates three ferryboats: Admiral Joe Fowler, Richard F. Irvine, and General Joe Potter.
Whether Disney will close one of two Magic Kingdom docks during construction—cutting guest capacity in half—remains unconfirmed.
Addressing Peak Congestion
Expanded queues target congestion during busy periods when ferry lines extend through dock areas as guests wait for available boats. The infrastructure updates may also prepare for potential future ferry additions or maintain dock systems that have been in continuous operation for nearly 55 years.
With permits approved, Walt Disney World Resort controls the construction timeline. No public statements suggest when guests will encounter barriers or reduced ferry service during expansion work that will permanently alter how Magic Kingdom Park’s opening-day transportation system functions.
