In Central Florida, it has been big news that the I-4 Express Lanes are officially open. Anyone who has ever driven on I-4 knows how crazy traffic can get. I-4 is the main highway in Central Florida and connects all the main theme parks.

The construction has been in the works for years, and on February 26, the lanes were open to drivers. The only catch is these lanes are going to be toll roads. The price will vary throughout the day, and what traffic looks like. If you want to try these lanes out for free, you have until March 2. Starting March 3, you will have to pay to drive in these lanes.

Over the weekend, many travelers were trying out these lanes to see how they work. Many followed the speed limit and laws of the road, but others decided that there were no rules. Over the weekend, Troopers issued 77 speeding tickets, and two of them were going over 99 mph. The highest speed was 101 mph. It is clearly marked that the speed limit is 60 mph.

While stopped, many drivers told Troopers they thought they could go faster in the express lanes.

Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Kim Montes said: “It’s almost like you’re in your own little world out there and I think drivers are getting a false sense of security and going as fast as they can. We will continue to conduct traffic enforcement within the express lanes.”

The point of these lanes is to avoid heavy congestion along the mainline, not to go as fast as you can. If the speed limit is a certain speed on the regular lanes, it will be consistent on the express lanes.

So if you want to try out the new express lanes, just follow the rules of the road. Know that Troopers are out monitoring speed, and if you are breaking the law, they will stop and ticket you.
