Mark Hamill has been inching away from Luke Skywalker for a while now. But in a new interview, he’s putting it plainly: he’s done.
Speaking with ComicBook.com while promoting his new film, The Life of Chuck, Hamill looked back on his time with Star Wars and made it clear he has no plans to return.
“Listen, I am so grateful to George [Lucas] for letting me be a part of that back in the days,” he said. “I never expected it to become a permanent franchise.”
Over the last few years, Hamill has appeared in everything from live-action de-aged cameos (The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett) to voice work in LEGO Star Wars specials. But don’t expect any more Force ghost scenes—especially not the robe-less kind.
“By the way, when I disappeared [in The Last Jedi], I left my robes behind,” he said. “And there’s no way I’m appearing as a naked Force Ghost.”
That doesn’t leave much room for return. Even as new Star Wars projects move forward, including a sequel-era movie centered on Rey (Daisy Ridley), Hamill is stepping back.
“I had my time, you know, I’m appreciative of that,” he said. “But I really think they should focus on the future and all the new characters.”

That sentiment lines up with what Lucasfilm has been saying about its upcoming slate. Outside of animated (parody) appearances and legacy content, Luke Skywalker’s role seems to be winding down—or at least evolving without Hamill at the center of it.
There’s no official word yet on whether another actor will be cast to take on a younger or different version of Luke. But one thing’s clear: Hamill won’t be the one holding the lightsaber next time. And he sounds perfectly at peace with that.
