Patrick Gibson’s upcoming turn as James Bond in the video game “007 First Light” is already generating attention — but his time in the tuxedo may be overshadowed before it even begins. The third-person action title, due out in 2026, gives fans a digital Bond adventure with Gibson as the lead.
But, by the time the game releases, director Denis Villeneuve and writer Steven Knight’s rebooted Bond film (under Amazon MGM) will likely be deep into its production, meaning that Gibson’s portrayal will be quickly eclipsed by the next actor to headline the official series on the big screen.

The trailer for “First Light” offers glimpses of Gibson’s Bond navigating an origin-era story, showcasing set pieces that look fit for the big screen.
Still, it’s hard to ignore the history of short-lived Bonds. George Lazenby’s one-film tenure in 1969 (On Her Majesty’s Secret Service) remains the most famous example, and Gibson looks set to join that same category — albeit in a different medium.
Once Villeneuve’s film arrives, complete with a new actor carrying the cinematic legacy, Gibson’s Bond will inevitably be pushed aside in the cultural conversation.

But, if anything, the game could become a rare experiment: a chance to see what happens when an actor is tasked with bringing Bond to life outside the traditional framework of the film series. And if the title succeeds commercially, sequels could still give Gibson’s Bond an extended run, even if the next era for the film franchise is already established by then.
For now, Gibson is both the newest James Bond — a 007 stepping into the role at a time when the series is about to change course on the big screen yet again. His performance may not define Bond’s future, but it could leave its mark on how fans experience the world’s most famous spy.
