Pat Carroll, the voice actress behind one of the most iconic Disney villains of all time, sadly passed away at the age of 95.
Most known for her role as Ursula in the 1989 Walt Disney Animation Studios film, The Little Mermaid, Deadline reports that Carroll passed in her home on Cape Cod on July 30, 2022, while recovering from a recent bout of pneumonia.
The Emmy, Drama Desk, and Grammy-winning singer, actress, and comedian rose to fame as a live-action film actress in the 1940s, with her first performance in the world of fairy tales in 1965 when she portrayed “Prunella,” one of the evil stepsisters in a 1965 musical version of Cinderella.
In terms of her career with Disney, fans love and remember Carroll for her performance in one of the most legendary Disney villain songs of all time, “Poor Unfortunate Souls.” The song, which also lends itself to one of the best scenes in the Under the Sea – Journey of the Little Mermaid Disney theme park attraction, was even a favorite to perform for Carroll herself.
In addition to the 1989 Disney animated film, Carroll continued her voice work with Disney on The Little Mermaid TV series that ran from 1992-94, as well as House of Mouse and The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse. In The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea (2000), Carroll returned not to play Ursula, but her the villain’s infamous sister Morgana. Along with these roles, Carroll reprised her role as Ursula in the world of Disney gaming, lending her voice to the character in multiple Kingdom Hearts games.
Carroll also made frequent appearances throughout her life with Disney, at events like D23 and others where she could continue to share her passion for playing Ursula with fans.
Our thoughts are with Carroll’s family during this difficult time, and here on DisneyTips we will always remember her for the joy her legacy continues to bring to fans around the world.
