On June 28, 2025, Disneyland Resort guests found themselves stuck in the dark when Pirates of the Caribbean broke down. TikTok user @cynthiaa822 captured a video of the breakdown and how guests had to physically help get the ride back in motion.
The Pirates of the Caribbean ride, which originally opened in Disneyland Park in 1967, has long been one of Disney’s most popular attractions. Versions of the ride have since been introduced at Walt Disney World Resort, Disneyland Paris Resort, and Tokyo Disneyland, each offering guests a chance to sail through the perilous pirate-infested waters of the Caribbean.
Over the years, the ride has undergone several updates, including the introduction of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) animatronics and the controversial revision of the bride auction scene. Regardless of the updates, the current version of the ride is not without some criticisms. One guest famously went viral in 2023 after describing the male animatronics as “a little bit rapey.”
Despite these ongoing debates about its content, Pirates of the Caribbean isn’t scheduled for any updates in the future, and the attraction usually operates without issue. However, on this particular day, Disney Park guests were forced into an unexpected role on board.
After Pirates of the Caribbean broke down at the top of a hill, guests found themselves in the dark, motionless boats. Disney cast members instructed the guests to rock the boat repeatedly to get it moving again. TikTok user @cynthiaa822 described the process: “They made us go back n fourth till we pushed down.”
@cynthiaa822 we got stuck on pirates of the Caribbean 😭😭😭😹 they made us go back n fourth till we pushed down #disneyland #piratesofthecaribbeanridedisneyland #disney #fypシ #ridesatdisney #fyp
Once Disney Park guests managed to get the boat moving, the ride resumed its course and continued to operate without further interruptions. It’s unclear what exactly caused the breakdown, as Disneyland Resort typically does not release detailed information about minor ride malfunctions. However, the ride continued operating normally in the following days.
