Disneyland Resort’s iconic Pirates of the Caribbean ride is no stranger to breakdowns, but its latest malfunction left guests stranded for more than 30 minutes, sparking fresh concerns over the attraction’s aging infrastructure.

Debuting in 1967, Pirates of the Caribbean was the final ride Walt Disney personally oversaw before his passing. Over the decades, it has remained a fan favorite, inspiring films, merchandise, and versions at Magic Kingdom Park, Tokyo Disneyland, and Disneyland Paris. However, its frequent breakdowns have left some questioning whether the attraction is due for more than just minor refurbishments.

Last week, TikTok user Shelby (@l8dyshe) shared a video of the latest ride stoppage, showing guests awkwardly “stuck horizontal” mid-ride.

“Help is not coming,” she joked in the video, explaining that guests had been stranded for at least 30 minutes.

It remains unclear whether Disney cast members evacuated the ride or managed to restart it.

Controversy Surrounding the Pirates of the Caribbean Ride

In addition to mechanical failures, Pirates of the Caribbean has faced controversy in recent years due to some of its outdated themes. In the 2000s, Disney Imagineers added Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) to the attraction. Then, in the late 2010s, Disney removed the infamous “bride auction” scene, replacing it with a more modern narrative featuring a female pirate named Redd.

Still, some guests have called for even more changes—or even the removal of the ride entirely. In 2023, one visitor went viral for claiming Pirates of the Caribbean felt outdated and inappropriate. “I just think this is kind of a weird ride,” she said. “I don’t know… It’s just a little bit rapey.”

Though the statement sparked a backlash from many Disney Parks fans, some agreed, with one commenting, “It feels like we’re the entertainment for them and I do not like it.”

“I always felt violated on this ride,” another added.

For now, Disneyland Resort has not announced any additional reimaginings for Pirates of the Caribbean. However, with frequent breakdowns and ongoing guest debates about the ride’s themes, some wonder if the attraction is due for a more extensive overhaul.

Regardless of the controversy, the New Orleans Square ride remains one of Disneyland Park’s most beloved experiences, drawing massive crowds daily. As of now, Pirates of the Caribbean has reopened, though guests may want to prepare for potential delays on future voyages.

  1. Some people are way over the top. I hate how some people want to change historical things. Yes there were pirates and they were bad, what makes this any different then the video games out there which are much worse for example GTA .
This ride makes you feel rapey????? Honestly it is not even a word.
    Also melts down?
