The world of animation was changed by Walt Disney. Pixar was purchased by Disney in 2006. Together, Disney and Pixar have made some of our favorite animations.
Pixar is well known for classic animated films like ‘Toy Story’ (1995), ‘Finding Nemo’ (2003), and ‘The Incredibles’ (2004). Their newest film ‘Elemental’ (2023) premiered this past weekend, bringing in a low for the animation company. The total box office including international sales came to $44.5 million when the film production was estimated at $200 million. Disney Dining notes, “For comparison, Disney’s live-action remake of ‘The Little Mermaid’ (2023) made over $160 million worldwide on its opening weekend.”
According to Variety, “‘Elemental’ has been embraced by its audience, who awarded the film an “A” CinemaScore.” This does give some hope that the film can recover its box-office earnings in the upcoming weeks.

‘Elemental’
The animated film is about an adventure between two opposites, water, and fire. The film really takes home the idea that opposites attract as they try to become a part of each other’s very different lives. The elements are raised to stay in their lane and to keep separate from, air, fire, and water. The main characters of the film, Ember and Wade, realize they have more in common than they ever could’ve imagined.

Pixar’s Highs and Lows
After the flop at the box office, it is estimated that the film did not do as well because of the lack of a household name. Like ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse‘ (2023), the increased interest in the film is partly due to its popularity over the years. This can pose an issue for Pixar and any new films to follow as remakes and franchises continue to grow their films.
‘Elemental’ follows suit with other Pixar films that did not perform as well in previous years. ‘The Good Dinosaur’ (2015) and ‘Onward’ (2020) are among two of the lowest box office films, racking in only $39 million. Unlike their popular films, ‘Toy Story’ earned $394 million along with ‘Finding Nemo’ earning $940 million.

It is certainly hard to create fan favorites like ‘Toy Story’ so often, giving hope that maybe ‘Elemental’ will have better weeks to come.
