Reopening Date Set Following Disney Park’s Latest COVID-19 Closure

COVID-19-related closures and restrictions have been impacting Disney Parks and Resorts (along with the rest of the world) since the onset of the pandemic in 2020.

While many of the pandemic-era restrictions have since been lifted from Disneyland and the Walt Disney World Resort (including mask requirements, temperature checks, and social distancing), some protocols introduced during this time have remained, like restrictions on Park Hopping and the theme park reservation system.

Unfortunately, for one Disney Park, staying open this late in the pandemic has proved to be quite the challenge as restrictions from the local government continue to shut down theme park and other non-essential business operations.

Shanghai Disneyland was forced to close once again only last week when COVID-19 restrictions returned to the region alongside a series of protests against the recurring forced lockdowns and censorship under China’s Communist Party. The Park had already been closed from October 31-November 25, 2022, only to reopen for just four days and close once again (then indefinitely) on November 29, 2022.

Earlier today, Shanghai Disneyland confirmed that the Park will reopen this Thursday, December 8, 2022. The official announcement listed on Disney’s website reads:

Dear Guests,
Shanghai Disneyland will resume operations on December 8, 2022, operating from 8:30 to 20:00 on the reopening day, marking Shanghai Disney Resort’s return to full operations.
For ticket information, please refer to the Shanghai Disney Resort official website, app, Weixin/WeChat account, the resort’s Reservation Center, or contact the resort’s official travel trade partners.
The resort’s pandemic control measures will be updated in accordance with the latest local government guidelines and guests should check and strictly follow them. Select attractions, live entertainment, restaurants and retail locations may not be available or may operate at reduced capacity. For guests whose travel plans were impacted during the closure period, you may contact the original purchase channel with your enquiries or to request a refund or exchange.

As other Disney Parks around the world have continued to bring back pre-pandemic offerings, including long-closed restaurants and shops, entertainment, and more, Shanghai Disney has remained set without new enhancements for some time now.

No further closures are planned at the moment for Shanghai Disneyland (or other Disney theme parks); however, we will continue to monitor the tension between locals and the government in and around Shanghai, as well as changes to COVID-19 restrictions that could come with the potential for future closures.
