Another Classic Falls: Universal Plans Indefinite Closure of ‘Shrek’

In most Universal parks, Shrek 4-D is already part of the past. The attraction that once served as a fixture of the early 2000s has slowly disappeared from the global lineup, leaving only two locations where guests can still experience it.

Universal Studios Singapore operates Shrek 4-D year-round inside its Far Far Away land, which also features Enchanted Airways and Puss in Boots’ Giant Journey. Universal Studios Japan, however, has offered the show only intermittently in recent years, reopening it for short stretches before returning it to downtime.

The Osaka park has now confirmed that the attraction is heading back into another long break. The move continues a years-long pattern in which the theater has closed more often than it has operated, making each reopening feel increasingly temporary.

Universal Studios Japan Schedules Another Indefinite Closure

Universal Studios Japan has updated its refurbishment calendar to show that Shrek’s 4-D Adventure — and Sesame Street 4-D Movie Magic, which shares the same theater — will close beginning January 9, 2026. Universal has not listed a reopening date. The closure is marked as ā€œindefinite,ā€ a designation the park has used for multi-year pauses.

This new shutdown comes shortly after a brief return. Shrek’s 4-D Adventure only reopened on November 19, ending a closure that began on January 23, 2025. The attraction had already been offline for three years during an earlier extended refurbishment period, reflecting how inconsistent its operating pattern has become.

Shrek 4-D first opened during the height of the franchise’s popularity.

The show presents a short adventure set after the first film, reuniting Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, and the original voice cast. Motion seating and simple in-theater effects were part of the experience, offering a compact version of Universal’s early 4-D era.

A Park With Several Key Attractions Offline

The upcoming pause aligns with a wider stretch of closures across Universal Studios Japan. Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey remains unavailable from November 7 to December 4, though the Hogwarts Castle Walk remains open. Universal Monsters Live: Rock and Roll Show is closed from November 4 through December 1.

Moppy’s Balloon Trip is unavailable from November 16 to November 22. Elmo’s Go-Go Skateboard is down from November 26 to December 17. Two other Sesame Street attractions — Ernie’s Rubber Duckie Race and Sesame’s Big Drive — have not operated since June 2020.

Space Fantasy – The Ride continues its cycle of rotating overlays. After operating briefly in its standard form over the summer, the coaster is set to premiere Space Fantasy – The Ride: CLUB ZEDD REMIX from January 30 through August 17, 2026. Universal says guests will “step inside where powerful music and light take you to spectacular outer space!”

With multiple attractions down at once, the paused Shrek theater remains another open question. Universal Studios Japan has not announced whether Shrek 4-D will return, whether the space will remain dormant, or whether it could support seasonal content tied to the park’s expanding roster of anime collaborations.
