A recent report sheds light on an important decision for Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

The film marks the fourth solo outing for Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, following the record-breaking success of Spider-Man: No Way Home. That 2021 release earned more than $1.9 billion worldwide and became one of Marvel’s most culturally dominant films to date.

Narratively, No Way Home ended on a quieter note than expected. After Doctor Strange erased Peter Parker from everyone’s memory, Peter chose to live anonymously, severing ties with MJ, Ned, and the Avengers. The ending reset the character’s place in the MCU.

Brand New Day picks up four years later. According to early reports, the story moves away from Multiverse chaos and focuses on street-level crime. Peter is said to uncover a larger mystery while investigating a series of smaller incidents across New York City.

Marvel has kept plot details deliberately vague. Still, several confirmed casting choices suggest a darker, more grounded tone. Mark Ruffalo returns as Bruce Banner, and Jon Bernthal is set to appear as Frank Castle, also known as the Punisher. Sadie Sink has also joined the cast in an undisclosed role.

What has drawn the most attention, however, is not who appears in the film, but what does not.

A Landmark Missing From New York

One notable absence in Brand New Day is the Statue of Liberty, despite the film being set in New York City. The omission is striking, given the landmark’s prominent role in No Way Home.

In the 2021 film, the Statue of Liberty was redesigned with Captain America’s shield and served as the location for the movie’s climactic battle. Several key action scenes unfolded across the monument.

According to Puck News’ “What I’m Hearing” newsletter, the Statue of Liberty became a major issue during No Way Home’s attempt to secure a theatrical release in China.

The report states that Chinese authorities initially requested the landmark’s complete removal from the film. Sony rejected the request. Regulators then proposed trimming shots that were viewed as overly patriotic.

Sony reportedly considered the edits but ultimately declined. As a result, Spider-Man: No Way Home never received a theatrical release in China.

That decision came with financial consequences. Although China’s box office influence has declined, it remains an important market for major studio releases, particularly large-scale franchise films.

Now, Sony Film CEO Tom Rothman has publicly addressed the situation during an appearance on The Town with Matt Belloni.

“I really didn’t look forward to sitting in there in front of Congress telling them why I cut the Statue of Liberty out at the request of the Chinese Communist Party,” he said.

Rothman has since described the Statue of Liberty’s absence from Brand New Day as a “total coincidence,” though the timing has fueled speculation about Marvel’s international release strategy.

A Smaller Story With Personal Stakes

Beyond geopolitical considerations, Brand New Day appears designed as a tonal shift. Peter Parker is no longer facing universe-ending threats. Instead, the focus is on consequences, isolation, and incremental danger.

Reports suggest Peter is dealing primarily with street-level crime, echoing earlier Spider-Man stories that emphasize character over spectacle. The film is positioned as a reset, not an escalation.

That reset may extend to Peter’s personal life. Insider Daniel Richtman has reported that Eman Esfandi has been cast as a new boyfriend for MJ.

Esfandi, known for Ahsoka, is rumored to be playing Paul Rabin, a divisive character from Marvel Comics. The role has not been confirmed by Marvel.

Fan response has been mixed, with speculation fueled by reports that Esfandi’s character may differ from the comic version. Marvel has not commented on the casting.
