‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ Movie May Be Resetting the Disney+ Series

As The Mandalorian & Grogu prepares for its May 22, 2026 theatrical debut, details suggest that Disney might be using the film to bring Mando back to basics by focusing almost entirely on Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu. With multiple recurring characters from the series mysteriously absent, the film could be a deliberate reset of the Disney+ series.

Bo-Katan Kryze, one of the series’ most recognizable faces, is one of many recurring characters who isn’t listed in the cast. But her apparent absence might have something to do with a surprising reveal made by actress Katee Sackhoff on her podcast recently.

Katee Sackhoff Shocks Star Wars Fans With Revelation

Recently, Sackhoff admitted that playing Bo-Katan affected her both personally and professionally, explaining on her podcast, The Sackhoff Show, “I lost all of my confidence after [The] Mandalorian… For three years, I basically didn’t work.”

The star attributes that loss of confidence to not understanding the character. “Bo-Katan is nowhere near who I am as a human being,” she said. “Her life, what she wants, like, I didn’t understand her. As much as I understood her, I never felt her in my stomach.

She added: “I never identified with her. I didn’t know how to find her. And it broke me, it just broke me, where I started doubting everything about myself. I’m not a strong auditioner on tape, and I was having to put myself on tape, I wasn’t booking anything. And for three years, I basically didn’t work. And it just destroyed my confidence.”

Bo-Katan Is Unlikely To Return, Possibly Due to Season 3’s Reception

While this doesn’t necessarily confirm she’s gone from The Mandalorian for good, it does line up with the absence of her character in the upcoming film. And with Season 4 nowhere in sight, it’s hard not to suspect that Disney and Lucasfilm have moved on without her.

Other notable omissions include Giancarlo Esposito’s Moff Gideon, Emily Swallow’s The Armorer, and Amy Sedaris’ Peli Motto. Even returning fan-favorites like Rosario Dawson’s Ahsoka Tano and Temuera Morrison’s Boba Fett appear unlikely to return, suggesting Disney is narrowing the story for cinematic purposes.

This approach would mark a shift from the series’ previous seasons, which leaned heavily on crossovers and animated-era characters. By stripping down the roster, the film can refocus on the central dynamic between Din Djarin and Grogu, potentially re-establishing the charm that propelled the show to its initial success. It’s also worth noting that The Mandalorian Season 3 had mixed reviews — interestingly in part due to the way Bo-Katan was handled.

The Mandalorian & Grogu Will Be Bittersweet for Fans

Whether this “back-to-basics” approach is deliberate remains to be seen. The upcoming film could serve as a standalone story within the broader Mando-Verse, setting up new characters and spinoffs while leaving past arcs behind. Either way, for fans, it may feel like both an exciting reset and a bittersweet farewell to some of the characters they’ve grown attached to.

The Mandalorian & Grogu promises to be a pivotal moment for the franchise, and with Disney seemingly willing to drop certain characters, audiences may get a more focused, intimate adventure — but one that doesn’t include everyone from the series’ sprawling cast.

Sigourney Weaver, Jonny Coyne, and Jeremy Allen White will also star in the film.
