Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! isn’t in the best shape, as per recent visitors to Disneyland Resort.
It’s been over seven years since Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! first launched at Disney California Adventure on May 27, 2017, transforming the former Twilight Zone Tower of Terror into a high-energy Marvel thrill ride. The attraction quickly became a fan favorite, praised for its immersive storytelling, unpredictable ride sequences, and nostalgic rock soundtrack.
What is Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!?
While the Tower of Terror’s drop tower structure remained, everything else was reimagined to fit the chaotic, intergalactic world of the Guardians. The ride’s storyline follows Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper) as he attempts to break his team out of the Collector’s fortress, a massive alien museum filled with rare artifacts—including the captured Guardians themselves.
The attraction marked Disney’s first full-scale ride based on the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, blending humor, action, and music to bring the characters to life. Several actors reprised their roles, including Chris Pratt (Peter Quill/Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), and Dave Bautista (Drax the Destroyer). Even Marvel icon Stan Lee made a cameo.

Similar to its eerie predecessor, Mission: BREAKOUT! thrives on unpredictability. It features six randomized drop sequences, each synced to a classic rock hit like “Born to Be Wild” or “I Want You Back.” Guests are thrown into Rocket’s daring escape plan, experiencing sudden free falls, explosive visuals, and an adrenaline-pumping storyline.
During Halloween, the ride transforms into Guardians of the Galaxy – Monsters After Dark, a seasonal overlay that takes place after the events of the original ride. This version follows Rocket’s mission to rescue Groot, who was accidentally left behind, while monstrous creatures lurk within the fortress.
What’s Happening to Mission: BREAKOUT!?
When it first opened, Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! was a major milestone for Disney California Adventure as its first Marvel attraction. Now, as Avengers Campus prepares to expand to include two additional superhero-inspired rides, some guests feel that Mission: BREAKOUT! is not receiving the same level of care it once did.
According to discussions on Reddit, the ride has been experiencing frequent operational issues. “They have had at least [one] loading shaft closed almost every single time I’ve gone on it in the past 6 months,” one user noted.
Another guest echoed the sentiment, claiming, “I was there last weekend and they only had one of the shafts working. Even with Lightning Lane it took an hour to get on. It should’ve had all four working.” (The ride actually operates with three shafts, but the frustration remains.)
Beyond capacity issues, fans have pointed out problems with the Rocket Raccoon animatronic, a key figure in the ride’s pre-show. “When I was there last week they were only operating two of the shafts, and then one went down on Friday morning. Rocket wasn’t working on either side,” one parkgoer reported.

Looking ahead, a refurbishment is planned for the attraction, though it remains unclear how extensive it will be. One guest speculated, “Maybe instead of fixing one shaft at a time and leaving Rocket on B mode, maybe they’ll go in and give it some TLC.”
With demand for the ride still high, these technical difficulties have led to growing frustration among guests. Whether Disney will address these concerns in the upcoming refurbishment remains to be seen.
