The Marvel Cinematic Universe is still leaning hard into the Multiverse — and for Spider-Man, that now includes more than one actor juggling the same hero across different projects.
Today, September 24, Disney+ is releasing Marvel Zombies, a four-episode animated miniseries that gives the wall-crawler to Hudson Thames. At the same time, Tom Holland has temporarily stepped away from his live-action duties as the friendly neighborhood hero after sustaining a concussion on the set of Spider-Man: Brand New Day in the U.K.

Thames, 31, is familiar to fans who’ve followed Marvel’s animation slate. He previously played Peter Parker in What If…? (2021) and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man (2025). His version of the character has quickly become Marvel’s animated counterpart to Holland, doubling down on the same mix of youthful charm and steely resolve.
But Marvel Zombies pushes that portrayal into grim new territory. In the trailer, Spider-Man is shown dispatching the undead with brutal efficiency, using his webs to decapitate several zombies in one sweeping move. Marvel has already labeled the show its most violent animated project to date, signaling that the studio isn’t afraid to test just how far superhero horror can go inside the MCU’s Phase Six.
The ensemble around Thames is stacked with returning stars from the MCU: Elizabeth Olsen (Wanda Maximoff/Red Queen), Iman Vellani (Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel), Hailee Steinfeld (Kate Bishop), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova), David Harbour (Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian), Paul Rudd (Scott Lang/Ant-Man), Wyatt Russell (John Walker/U.S. Agent), Dominique Thorne (Riri Williams/Ironheart), Simu Liu (Xu Shang-Chi), Tessa Thompson (Valkyrie), and Randall Park (Jimmy Woo).
Meanwhile, Holland — who headlined Homecoming (2017), Far From Home (2019), and No Way Home (2021) before returning for Brand New Day — is recovering from his on-set accident. Though filming briefly shut down after the incident, the July 31, 2026 release date hasn’t been altered, and outlets have suggested the actor may only be out for about a week.
So, for now, Spider-Man lives on in two places at once: Holland resting off-camera while Thames swings into Marvel’s darkest animated entry yet.
