HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Casting Fuels Wizarding World Multiverse Theory

HBO’s Harry Potter reboot has been promoted as a faithful retelling of J.K. Rowling’s novels, but one casting choice has thrown us into speculation mode. Warwick Davis, who played Professor Filius Flitwick in the original film franchise, is confirmed to return for the new series — and that’s where things get pretty confusing.

If HBO is truly starting from scratch, why bring back a familiar face while recasting everyone else? Well, the answer might be that it isn’t a straight reboot at all. Davis reprising Flitwick could be a subtle hint that the series takes place in a broader Wizarding World Multiverse, one where timelines overlap and certain characters remain constant.

The theory isn’t as far-fetched as it sounds. Prisoner of Azkaban already introduced the Time-Turner, a magical object capable of creating alternate versions of events.

Some fans have wondered for years that the device essentially fractured the Wizarding World’s timeline. If HBO builds on that idea, Davis’s return makes perfect sense — Flitwick could be one of the few constants across branching realities.

This also helps explain how other branches of the franchise fit in. The video game “Hogwarts Legacy”, for instance, exists in its own canon, but a Multiverse framework would allow it to coexist with both the original films and the upcoming series without contradiction.

Of course, HBO hasn’t confirmed anything along these lines, but if they want a bigger, connected mythology, this would be the best route. Multiverses are everywhere in pop culture right now, from Marvel and DC to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Terminator.

For now, all we know is that Warwick Davis is back. But in a universe as magical as this one, that single casting choice could mean far more than a nostalgic call-back.

HBO’s Harry Potter cast includes John Lithgow (Albus Dumbledore), Nick Frost (Rubeus Hagrid), Paapa Essiedu (Severus Snape), Katherine Parkinson (Molly Weasley), Arabella Stanton (Hermione Granger), Alastair Stout (Ron Weasley), Dominic McLaughlin (Harry Potter), Paul Whitehouse (Argus Filch), Janet McTeer (Minerva McGonagall), Luke Thallon (Quirinus Quirrell), Leigh Gill (Griphook), and Lox Pratt (Draco Malfoy).

The series will debut in 2027 on HBO and HBO Max.
