Top 10 Most Heinous Disney Villains

Villains are a group of Disney citizens that we love to hate.  We couldn’t have the amazing Disney stories and characters that we do without the evil works of the villains, and we even have villains that we “like” or consider to be among our favorite characters.  That doesn’t mean that their acts are any less evil or heinous.  Here is my ranking of the top 10 most heinous Disney villains based on the nature of their crimes:

10. Shere Khan – The Jungle Book

He hates all men and vows to kill any man he meets, regardless if they are a young boy raised by other jungle animals.  That’s a level of racism and hatred that earns him a place on the top heinous villains.  The moment where we thought he killed Baloo brought tears to all of our eyes, leaving none of us upset when Shere Kahn met defeat!

9. The Headless Horseman

The Adventures of Ichabod & Mr. Toad: His objective is to chase you down in the woods, and if he doesn’t scare you to death, he’ll chop off your head for himself.  I’d say this is a level of villain that none of us want to run into and leaves us hoping that we don’t find ourselves alone in the woods at night.

8. Governor Ratcliff – Pocohontas

This governor is definitely not one out to better his country.  He’s selfish and willing to kill an entire Indian tribe and risk the lives of all of his own men in the name of his greed.  He’s not above lying, cheating, stealing and murdering to get his way.  Fortunately his evil plans were thwarted, but he definitely doesn’t give politics a good name!

7. Edgar Balthazar – The Aristocats

We Disney fans have a soft spot for the Disney animal characters, and attempting to kill a mother and her baby kittens is pretty heinous in our eyes.  Imagine if he succeed and we missed out on the musical number, “Everybody Wants to be a Cat”! He at least wasn’t overly violent and wanted to just dump them somewhere hoping they wouldn’t make their way home and succumb to the elements. Hopefully he’s getting what he deserves in Timbuktu!

6. The Queen of Hearts – Alice In Wonderland

Alice in Wonderland: If you cross this crazy queen, it’s off with your head!  She probably has quite the extensive collection of severed heads by now.  She seems to have no conscience when it comes to murder, which adds to her evil points.  She’s definitely not someone that you want to play croquet with. Given the land she lives in where everything around her is a bit crazy, she ranks a little lower than she might have under normal circumstances. (Honorable mention goes to the walrus who ate the baby oysters!  That was just awful!)

5. The Evil Queen – Snow White

She’s insanely jealous and murderous.  She not only wants Snow White dead, but wants to hang onto her heart in a special golden box.  Her mirror believes that Snow White is prettier than her so she must die.  Then, when she can’t get the job done for her she tries to take matters into her own hands.  It’s pretty insane the lengths that she will go to in order to ensure that her mirror thinks that she is the fairest in all the land.

4. Maleficent – Sleeping Beauty

Her motive is never really explained (in the cartoon version at least), so this makes her seem even more evil.  We don’t know exactly why she wishes death on Princess Aurora, but she’s definitely trying everything she can to succeed.  Her dragon form makes her a force to be reckoned with, but unfortunately for her, good still endured.    It just goes to show that being a villain doesn’t pay off in the end!

3. Cruella de Vil – 101 Dalmatians

Her last name is a real indicator of who she is.  She is downright evil.  She wants to kill 101 baby dalmatians in order to make herself a fur coat so that she can wear them around day in and day out.  Talk about having no conscience!  We’ve already discussed how we Disney fans have a special appreciation for Disney animals so this puts here in the top 3 of most heinous villains.

2. Claude Frollo – The Hunchback of Notre Dame

There are a few moments in this movie that bring tears to my eyes, and Frollo is definitely more than deserving of his number 2 spot.  He murdered gypsy mother on the steps of Notre Dame and then wasn’t going to hesitate in murdering her baby son.  He only stopped when the priest reminded him that he couldn’t hide from what he was doing.  So, he kept Quasimodo in the bell tower and taught him to believe that he was ugly, an abomination, worthless, etc.  He is beyond heinous and completely evil.  He’s a hypocrite, too, when we see his interest and attraction to Esmeralda, even though he claims to hate all gypsies and is a murder.  It may seem like he may have been an easy choice for number 1, but there is one that is just a bit more heinous than Frollo.

1. Scar – The Lion King

And then there was Scar. He plotted and calculated murdering his brother and baby nephew.  When he succeeded at murdering his brother, he convinced Simba that it was his fault to make him feel unspeakable pain even though he fully anticipated that Simba would quickly be murdered as well.  Mufasa’s death is notorious as one of the saddest moments of all Disney movies and one that I still can’t watch without tearing up. (Yes, I’m that Disney fan!) It takes a special kind of evil to go to such lengths and planning in order to kill your own family, and over jealousy and power.  We’re glad that Simba escaped and eventually returned home and gave Scar what he deserved.  His evil plans have landed him the crown as our number 1 heinous villain.  At least he finally became the rightful king, just too bad it’s for nothing good!

About Christy Caby

I am a diehard Disney fanatic! I fell in love with all things Disney from an early age and that only increased once I first visited Walt Disney World! It led me to complete a yearlong Disney College Program working at merchandise locations within Disney’s Hollywood Studios (Disney-MGM Studios at that time) and I worked for Disney Parks & Resorts Technology in Project/Program Management. Now I get to write about Disney and help others plan their magical vacations! Disney holds a special place in the hearts of my entire family as my husband proposed there, we honeymooned there, took trips while pregnant with each of my boys and have visited with them many, many times from 8 weeks old through now. One of my favorite memories from each trip is always the look on my kids’ faces the first time they see the castle. I’d love to help you plan your magical vacation!
