A routine day at Walt Disney World Resort took an unexpected turn when The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror suddenly shut down mid-ride, leaving guests stranded in sweltering conditions. One Disney Park visitor took to social media to share their experience.
An Abrupt Stop on Tower of Terror
Since opening at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in July 1994, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror has remained one of the park’s most iconic attractions. Even as Hollywood Studios has undergone major changes—such as the addition of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, Toy Story Land, and the upcoming Monsters, Inc. (2001) land—the classic drop ride continues to thrill guests. Unlike Disneyland Resort’s version, which was rethemed to Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!, Walt Disney World Resort’s Tower of Terror has remained largely unchanged.
Despite its legendary status, the 30-year-old attraction is not immune to malfunctions. Redditor u/holylolzbatman recently recounted an uncomfortable experience getting stuck at the bottom of the elevator shaft after the ride’s final drop.
“Once, the car I was in got stuck at the end, halfway through turning toward the exit,” they wrote. “It was incredibly hot in the elevator shaft.”
Disney’s Rescue Effort
With guests trapped in the attraction, Disney cast members had to act quickly to resolve the issue. According to the guest, the park’s team had to completely restart the ride system to get things moving again.
“It was about half an hour before they were able to reboot the entire ride (had to shut off the power to both sides) and get the car to turn,” the Disney Park guest explained.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and guests were safely evacuated after the ride system rebooted.
What to Do If You’re Stuck on a Disney Ride
Unexpected ride stoppages are rare but not unheard of at The Most Magical Place on Earth. Whether due to weather, technical malfunctions, or sensor issues, Disney attractions are designed with multiple fail-safes to ensure guest safety. If you ever find yourself stuck on a ride at Walt Disney World Resort or Disneyland Resort, the best thing to do is remain seated, keep safety restraints locked, and wait for Disney cast member instructions.
