Police Swarm Universal Orlando Hotel, Question Guests After Lockdown

Guests at one Universal Orlando hotel found themselves at the center of an unexplained police response this weekend.

Universal’s Cabana Bay Beach Resort is normally one of the more relaxed corners of the resort, combining relatively affordable rooms with pools, a lazy river, bowling, and easy transportation to Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, and Universal CityWalk.

The 2,200-room hotel is especially convenient for Universal Volcano Bay, which sits directly beside the property and can be reached using a dedicated walking path.

But guests returning to Cabana Bay late this week were instead met by police officers, questions about their whereabouts, and, according to one account, a brief lockdown.

Guests Questioned as Police Search Universal Hotel

The first public accounts emerged after multiple law enforcement vehicles were spotted outside Cabana Bay on Friday night, September 11.

One guest shared a photo of the scene on Reddit, claiming officers were “in the lobby interviewing folks, walking the grounds and inspecting some rooms” in the hotel’s Thunderbird building.

According to the guest, the activity continued from around 8 p.m. until midnight.

The response reportedly escalated later in the evening when crime scene investigators arrived at the Universal Orlando hotel.

The same guest said investigators had established “a whole set up,” although exactly what police were investigating remained unclear.

Another guest subsequently claimed the police presence affected movement around Cabana Bay on Saturday.

“Police and security had the resort on lockdown,” they wrote, claiming their wife and other guests had temporarily been prevented from leaving the property.

The restriction apparently did not last long.

Asked whether the Universal hotel remained locked down, the commenter replied, “No, it was only for a brief moment.”

Another person in the discussion disputed that a lockdown had taken place, and there has been no official confirmation that Cabana Bay was formally placed under lockdown.

Accounts from other guests suggest the police response may have begun even earlier.

One person said their family returned to Cabana Bay after Halloween Horror Nights on Thursday night and found officers questioning hotel guests.

Police reportedly asked the family where they had been earlier that evening. After they explained that they had been at Halloween Horror Nights and had only recently returned by bus, officers moved on.

The same Reddit discussion later included a claim that police activity had stretched across three days. That timeline has not been independently confirmed.

Despite the scale of the reported response, there was no indication Saturday that Cabana Bay had suffered a wider operational shutdown.

One guest who arrived Friday said they had seen police but did not know why officers were at the resort. Asked about conditions the following day, they described the hotel as a “normal average day.”

No confirmed explanation for the police activity had been publicly released at the time of publication.

Inside the Magic has not independently verified the reason officers attended the hotel, the reported room inspections, or whether Universal or law enforcement formally restricted guests from leaving.

Claims circulating online attempting to connect the police presence to other incidents around Universal Orlando also remain speculation.

Cabana Bay Has Faced Previous Police Incidents

Cabana Bay has operated at Universal Orlando Resort since 2014, with its retro design drawing inspiration from American roadside resorts of the 1950s and 1960s.

Today, the hotel offers two large pool areas, a lazy river, a waterslide, the 10-lane Galaxy Bowl, restaurants, bars, and complimentary transportation across Universal Orlando Resort.

Its location and pricing also make it popular with Halloween Horror Nights visitors looking to stay onsite without paying the rates charged by some of Universal’s higher-tier hotels.

The latest police response is not the first reported law enforcement incident at Cabana Bay.

In August 2024, Orlando police responded after a man allegedly threatened guests and Team Members around one of the hotel’s pool areas.

The man had reportedly already been asked to leave another Universal property earlier that day. He was ultimately arrested and charged with resisting without violence and assault on a law enforcement officer.

Police returned to the resort for an unrelated incident in February 2025 after Universal Security reported a disturbance involving a woman who allegedly attempted to flee when approached.

Officers later located the woman near a vehicle and documented signs of alcohol impairment. The incident also involved two children and two adult men, including one man police described as extremely intoxicated while he was being trespassed from Universal property.

Cabana Bay also made headlines in December 2022 following reports of multiple confrontations around the hotel’s pool area.

One reported altercation resulted in the pool and lazy river closing early. A separate confrontation allegedly left a hotel security guard with a broken nose.

None of those previous incidents has been linked to this weekend’s police response.
