Walt Disney World dark rides are known for their immersive storytelling and attention to detail as they bring Guests into unique settings without relying on physical thrills. Even a slow-moving Fantasyland attraction can turn into a “nightmare,” however when an Audio-Animatronic malfunctions.
During a recent trip to the Magic Kingdom, one Guest’s ride on Under the Sea – Journey of the Little Mermaid felt more like a horror movie when one of the Ariel Animatronics was experiencing a technical issue. Take a look below at the video shared by @thevillageghost on TikTok:
The scene where Ariel was having an off day is one of the focal points of the attraction when Guests are immersed in one of the most iconic musical numbers of the 1989 Walt Disney Animation Studios film. In the scene, Sebastian leads the other sea creatures in a rousing performance of “Under the Sea,” that even has Ariel dancing along.
For yesterday’s riders, Ariel definitely not feeling like herself, and while this is not necessarily a common occurance on a Disney attraction, it can offer some quick laughs when it does happen. Thankfully Disney’s maintenance team is equipped to handle all kinds of last-minute Animatronic errors, and more often than not these issues are fixed by the following day.
Under the Sea – Journey of the Little Mermaid, when functioning properly, is an entertaining Fantasyland attraction the whole family can enjoy together. The ride tells the story of The Little Mermaid (1989) as Guests move “under the sea” and through each show scene on a clammobile.
The ride is oridinarily not frightening at all, however, small children do sometimes get a little uneasy when they see Ursula on the attraction.
Best of all, Under the Sea – Journey of the Little Mermaid often has short wait times as the ride vehicles are continiously moving, so this can be a great attraction to ride during a busy day at the Magic Kingdom if you are not using Disney Genie+ or Lightning Lane.
